Just got my UBBB BAS today.

First, Uncle Bill, thanks for sending the khukuri before you got the payment. I'm not even sure the check for my first one has gone through yet. The BAS arrived today in perfect shape, the packaging gave my CS Twistmaster a workout.

Second, this is one hunk of a knife! Now I know why you guys think the Kobra isn't a chopping tool. The BAS is 7/16ths thich at the bolster, 3/8ths at the angle and 1/4 at the final tun for the point. The knife is 15" OA and has a 11" blade and 5 1/2" hilt (counting from the tip of the tang through the buttcap to the middle of the edge of the bolster).

I got my Kobra as a blemish and NOBODY could figure out why it was a blem. Now I see a difference, the fit and finish on the BAS are higher than the Kobra. The horn grip is much better carved, the buttcap is better formed and Sword of Shiva is much better and brass inlayed.

The BAS clearly weighs more than the 18" Kobra and the BAS is more of a chopper, the Kobra's balance is more neutral.

I see that ddean puts his boxes to good use but the triangular package I got is now in sad shape or is that shapes. It chops beautifily! :D It cut well too which surprised me. The thrusts opened nearly T shaped holes, those would be pretty hard to recover from.

The karda and chakma are nice and also biggger than the ones with the Kobra. The new karda has a bigger handle and blade and is better shaped although both came pretty dull. The chakma is nice, I found the one with the Kobra is softer than the Kobra's edge. I check this one later. My chef's steel did a good job on the Kobra.

This khukuri has the initials K.M. and a six pointed star, that seems to be Kumar. Amusingly, I now have one khukuri with a Star of David and another with a swastika (however backwords from the Nazis).

By the way, I am familiar with the ancestry of the swastika and in this context it does not bother me.

Now on to the scabbard. Well, I'm less impressed. The chape is not well fitted although that's better than the Kobra's. The double strapped frog is very nice. :) the khukuri does not seat well and would start to fall out if turned upside down. The wide part of the blade will just pass through the mouth of the scabbard, the scabbard actualy tapers towards the mouth. The karda and chakma are also not seated well.

All in all, I'm Thrilled!!:D
:) I love the khukuri and by-knives.:)
I'll check out the Sarki Shop for a better scabbard.

I can't wait to show it off.

I have a Kumar BAS also and love the thing, the one and only thing I didn't like was the big crack that spread the length of the handle. I'll have to get around to fixing this one of these days.

Ahhhh, HIKV infection has now taken firm hold on you Red, now along comes the ol' Sarge to torment you. Like the Kobra? 'Course you do, it's a sweet blade. Like the BAS? Heck, what's not to like. Wish you had a single knife that combines the best qualities of both? That's called an eighteen inch Sirupati my friend. Don't take my word for it, ask Rusty, or Pappy, they're both honest men that know what they're talking about.

Sarge

I was looking at the Sirupatis. The 12" and the 30". I don't need something that does what I have, I need to fill other tasks.

Although, a 18" Sirupati does sound nice too.

I don't know if any of the Kamis will ever come up with a blade like the KNN knife I had. Kumar has done a pretty sweet job on the one I have now and it is a worker too. I'm sure the Kumar blade is just a bit heavier than the other one I had but it isn't really that noticeable with the 18" knife.

Something in the way that Sirupati is made, the shape, or the angle that makes it just a hail of a good knife to work with all day and not beat a fella to death. I don't have any Sher knives but from what I have read here at the forum Him and his brother Kumar must make the best handles that come out of that shop. Even at that I can't complain about the Bura knives..

Sarge is right though, I do think that the 18" Siru will do any thing that the BAS and the 18" Kobra can do. I hope nobody that isn't all that familiar with these khuks yet don't worry about these knives not being strong enough. They all have just one heck of a lot of steel going into that bolster and the first part of the handle. Just take a real close look at the amount of steel I am referring to.:) :)

18"Sirip.!! NOT TRYING TO PUSH THE 12":barf: !!SNIFF! Even The Pied Piper of..:barf:mentioned the 18"Sirip.!!It feels so good to see THE EVIL ONES LIKE PAPPY,admitting THE SAINT is right (as usual)! Enjoy your BAS!
THE SAINT!

By the way, I am familiar with the ancestry of the swastika and in this context it does not bother me.

When I was stationed in S. Korea many of my fellow soldiers were not familiar with it's ancient meaning and mistakenly thought that many of the shops were run by Nazis  . To be honest I was a little confused at first, but I got a good explanation from some of the guys who had been there a while and it all started to make sense then.

So you think the BAS is a great chopper? True it is, but wait until you get your hands on a GS that's 1/2" thick at the spine  . Mine chops like there's no tomorrow and still feels, not exactly light in the hand, but it still has some life to it, a little bit of swingability if you will. Not to put down the BAS, it's an excellent blade in it's own right and a great chopper next to an 18" kobra, but also not in the same class as some of the big heavy blades. I'd really like to get a GRS someday; I'll bet one of those could leave an axe in the dust when it comes to chopping. Enjoy your purchase Red, you're only in the early stages but there's no hope now. Just the prospect of ever more khukuries.

Roadrunner, I live in an apartment, I don't need a heavy duty chopper. A GS though looks so sweet.:)

AAGH! I want them all!

Red get a BGRS!!!! They're 18" of chopping fury that chops AND Cuts like a much bigger khuk!!!!
My BGRS is my favorite right next to my 18" AK for a grab it and go tool.
My Chitlangi is my favorite weapon style khuk with a Sirupati coming in a close second.:D

Yvsa, do you mean the Ganga Ram Special? Do you prefer the 18" over the 22" model? That belly is beautiful.

No, it's the Baby Ganga Ram Special.:)

Not really, In actuality I think they should have two seperate designations as they are indeed each a knife to their own purposes.
The BGRS or the 18" model is a wonderful all around blade while the GRS or 22" model is pretty much just a heavy chopper.

Red, I wasn't saying you actually need a big chopper; I was just letting you know what it will be like when you get one, because you will. And yes, the GS is sweet, glad you like it.

Sarge

Oh please. Am I the only forumite who's ever swung a Malla?

Sarge, send me your address, when the timing is appropriate, and I'll be happy to loan you my razor, I mean Malla...:D :D :D

Seriously, I will send it to you, just to read your writeup!

Sarge, I haven't had the 18" Bura Siru long enough to make up my mind. May have to do some handle work to make it fit and feel right. But that's the handle. Blade feels like it should cut 'bout as good as the 16.5 WW2 - maybe not quite up to it, but better than it should because of extra length of the blade and thus extra velocity.

But it won't sharpen up yet. It's sharp, yes, but it doesn't take a scary sharp edge. I evidently haven't learned to coax her the right way yet.

Yvsa,
I've been looking at the GRS. I hadn't noticed the differece in weight until now though. Yhat 18" looks very nice.

Swede79;
I've been drooling over the Malla. As I've written elsewhere, I have an interest in history and this khukuri has some. Does it balance for chopping or fighting?

It's a FIGHTER!!!!

To me, that's what makes it fun, a non-chopping oriented khukuri! Talk about an oxymoron! You have to hold it to appreciate it!!! :D

Update, my 18" Kobra is 1lbs 2 oz and the BAS is 1lbs 6oz. The difference in feel is tremendous!

Swede, thanks, that's what it looked like. I have the Kobra but what the hell, I need more khukuris. Fighting khkuris are more my thing and I don't want to miss out on the Malla like I did on the 18th Century model.

Jim, the first step is admitting you have a problem.

Red, what do you mean by that? ....If you're wanting an 18th Century model drop me a line and let's talk. ;) :D
I carried my 18th Century model for a while in place of my 18" AK because it was a real close contender as far as use goes.:D :p  ;)
