Leon Jones was murdered in Holyhead in 2009

Police on Anglesey are starting a second amnesty to educate people about the dangers of carrying knives.

The month-long campaign begins at police stations on Saturday.

A 'Dump a Knife, Save a Life' campaign was set up by Dave Hughes in Holyhead after the murder of Leon Jones, 21, in November 2009. :barf:

Mr Jones' family had taken comfort from the campaign, he said.

"This is the second such amnesty we've held on Anglesey," said neighbourhood policing sergeant Andrew McGregor.

"Although we know knife crime is low on the island we know there are public concerns," he added.

Sgt McGregor said this time the campaign would be aimed at educating people about the consequences of carrying knives.

This includes presentations to youngsters, community work and working with licensees to ensure knives are not taken into premises.

Leon's family have taken comfort from the campaign, let's not allow Leon's death be in vain”

Dave Hughes 'Dump a Knife, Save a Life' campaign :thumbdn:

"Carrying a knife is not acceptable and it does not keep you safe, it is an offence and you are actually putting yourself in danger of your weapon being used against you," Sgt McGregor added.

"Running such a campaign will allow us to remove knives from circulation, further reducing the risk to the public."

Red disposal bins will be located at Holyhead and Llangefni police stations, but people can also take their unwanted knives to stations in Menai Bridge, Gaerwen, Benllech, Valley and Amlwch.:(

Scott Whitley, also from Holyhead, is serving life in prison for Mr Jones's murder.

Dave Hughes from Holyhead set up the 'Dump a Knife, Save a Life' campaign following the death in November 2009.

In vain

It involved officers going to schools to speak to pupils about the dangers of knife crime.

"We would like to thank all those who took advantage of the last knife amnesty, however we are asking for your support once again," he said.

"Leon's family have taken comfort from the campaign, let's not allow Leon's death be in vain," he added.

During the two-month knife amnesty on Anglesey in 2009, 210 knives were handed in.

Over the last 12 months there have been seven incidents involving knives on Anglesey, including wounding and going equipped for stealing, where people have been charged.

Hello group,

Read this on BBC today.

Soooo....what exactly is an appropriate knife to turn over during the amnesty, an SAK , a Chefs Knife  a KaBar ??

The last time I checked a hammer can kill a person the same as a knife can kill a person, so should we turn in our hammers, screwdrivers and chisels :p

Anyway, it shows what happens, when government becomes our "Big Brother"!!

Cordially,

There's soomething sickening on a gut level, to this kind of big brother action helped by the people themselves by going along with it. I don't know what's in the water over there in the U.K., but I can only hope that they wake up soon. I am always amazed at the old 'demonize the tool' thing, and how well the unwashed masses go along with it. Are they actually too stupid to just hold the individual responsible and let it go at that? People comit crimes because of who they are, not because of what they may have in their pocket. No matter if it's the demon rum, the evil assault rifle, Saturday night special, or wicked devil knife whose mere possesion makes you want to stab someone, I've yet to hear of an inanimate object committing a crime all by itself.

Interesting that the biggest killer of human beings is the car in drunk driving accidents. Thousands and thousands of people a year. Yet no country has even brought up banning cars, as dangerous as they are. Hmmm.

We can only hope and pray the Brits wake up and take their human rights back from the nanny state.

Carl.

hi guys pity my first post on such asad subject but i live localy to this case, the truth is that the killer wasnt carrying a knife but after a confrontation with leon the killer ,a known junkie scumbag ran into his house for a kitchen knife and stabbed poor leon, with his past record for violence he would probably have been in jail in usa but due to our leniency in dealing with violent crime it was only a matter of time before he killed someone be it with knife ,hammer or bottle. Our media jump on these event and give a skewed slant to the crimes. We as a country must be tougher with criminals not knives, most people are stabbed with kitchen knives in this country not spydercos, kershaws or opinels any way a happier new year to you all all the best alan

The General Knife Discussion is not an all-purpose bulletin board. This topic belongs in the Political Arena. Since the original poster is a Registered User, I will not move the thread there. I moved it to Knife Laws instead for reference and will close it now.
