secondary bevel after heat treat?

So I heat treated a kiridashi today and found that I could not get a very good edge on it because of lack of secondary bevel. Is it the norm that makers rough grind their knives before heat treat and then finish the knife after heat treat. Sorry if this is a newb question and I apologize if this is in the wrong section or anything. Thanks for the suggestion. Please don't facepalm too aggresively.

Hey welcome to Bladeforums!

That is normal to rough grind pre heat treat but can be done other ways as well.

A grind with no secondary bevel can be extremely sharp.

Did you grind the decarb ("skin") off of the knife after heat treating? that will be a start... The heat treat is key as well, I wrote this up to help out. http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/s...lection-for-Beginning-Knifemakers-My-Thoughts

The guys over in Shop Talk will be able to help, just click the bottom left icon to report your post and it can be moved over there if you like. The stickies over there will help out a ton too. We like to help!

Thanks for the information and I am obviously not very experienced so my heat treat may be the problem. I used a rather basisc method and 1095 steel( Heated edge until nonmagnetic then quenched in oil. Then tempered for about 1 hr at 400 degrees) I believe I achieved a good hardness. I will make sure to clean up the edge and then I may go back and work on the grind slightly. If all else fails I have a really scary looking prybar. Thank you for the information and hospitality.

Only if I had researched heat treating 1095 more before ordering two feet i probably would have went the 1084 route.
