Just what and where is the secondary bevel on custom CQ's that I've been reading about. I've seen only about four of them and the blades seem about the same bevel wise. Derek, here's one for you: If one has a custom CQ with a bead blast finish blade, is it possible to send it back and have Ernie put a satin finish and relogo the blade? {For a price,of course}. Thanks.

Hi Eric -

A CQC6 that was made before EKC was opened for business has a smooth surface from the top of the grind straight down to the cutting edge (and were typically satin finish). That is what is considered a single bevel. The recent versions have a grind to create the cutting edge, and then a thin second grind to make that bevel a sharp one: the second bevel. The reason it gets so much discussion is because that is the way factory knives are sharpened, while it is unusual on a handmade knife (vis Martin, Terzuola, Elishewitz, et al).

Thanks JBRAVO. A clear, concise explanation of the second bevel. This clears it up. A friend has a two year old CQC6 with the second bevel and a satin polished blade. This must be a rare variation worth millions! Thanks.

I was really surprised to see the new batch of CQC67's at the New York show last fall. I don't like the secondary bevel at all. I definitely prefer it when the bevel goes right down to the edge like of the older handmades.

The difference of the 67 is not only with the bevel of the edge, but the blade itself is somewhat different. It's smaller then the old or standard 6, and the grind is also different. The best description that I can come up with is, the old blades look like a big meat clever while the one on the 67 looks skinny like it's from his production knives. The placement of the logo is also different. It's further back closer to the bolster on the older 6 while it's almost centered on the 67. Stamped compared to laser etched. Well, Ernie & Mary both told me that he hand ground the blade, so I guess I'm not going to doubt it.
