Secondary bevel question...

Hey guys, I have always found emersons choice to use the chisel grind interesting. In anycase, I have a question about the secondary bevel on my a-100. I was wondering why it is on the side that it is rather than having it the other way around.

As it is now, it makes an excellent grafting knife, but it would seem to function better for most everyday tasks if the bevel was on the opposite side. I still find the knife functions fantastic as it is, but just was curious.

Hope my post makes some sense, thanks in advance:)

it is mainly an aesthetic thing.

if you are holding the open knife, that is the side you see, so that is the side he grinds.

Yep, the grind is technically a lefty grind, but it looks more pleasing to the eye this way. And, functionality is just fine, once you get used to it.

interesting, never thought about it as an aesthetic thing. Yeah, it functions fine, but i think it would function better if reversed

Even the conventionally ground knives are actually chisel ground.

The bevel on most "V-grind" Emersons I've seen comes down symmetrically on both sides, but the final bevel that grinds out the edge of the knife is steeper on one side than it is on the other. This may make for a sharper edge, but it alters the optimal cutting angle.

If you don't like it, you might consider having it re-ground.

imho the RH vs LH doesnt matter much, i have had them both ways and i just dont think it matters for most cutting tasks.

though EKI calls it a "V" grind its always been my opinion they are all more of a CG, they cut like a CG, ya sharpen like a CG, "if it quacks like a duck" lol, of course technically speaking they are not, but to me they are not a std "V" either, i wish i had a nickle for everyone who has bought a commander expecting a std "V" and been disappointed, i could buy a commander lol.

but anyway i edc'd a BM stryker CG prototype that was RH ground for a while and imho it didnt cut much (if any) different than the EKI LH grind, i am RH FWIW, i was mildly suprised by this.
