i have a new steel to play with and the heat treat seems odd to me
aust. temp.2150 soak 10 min then oil quench
tempering
500F 60.5
600 60.5
750 61
950 65
975 65.5
1000 64.5
1025 63
1050 61.5
1100 56.5
all tempering is 2 times by 2 hours
this is a high vanadium SS
i have been advised not to temper between 950-1000
also that it should be next to finished before heat treat as it will be very hard to finish after hardening
thanks

Are you asking a question or making a statement ?? Steels with substantial amounts of V, Mo, W will exhibit secondary hardening . Knife makers temper things like S30V at about 400F .The secondary hardening characteristic is of no real value to the knife.

i was just wandering because of the sharp jump at around 800
and thank you for the response
the folks at crucible say that this steel should be hardened to 63 Rc no prob

Butcher Block, exactly which steel are you asking about. If it is 30v, 90v, 10v or 125V I have used all of them and can offer you the benifit of some hard earned experience. If you are using foil to protect from de-carb then at a first cut make sure it it high temp foil... Phil
