I need help. I plan on trading my small knife collection for either a large sebenza 21 damascus with micarta inlays or a hinderer xm-18 ( opinion's on what u think I should get also welcome. I can't make up my mind ) but with such a expensive knife i want a back up for really tough things. In order of importance I want something that has:

1. Bottle opener
2. Prying abilities (getting batteries out of remote, or opening a paint can)
3. Under 4.5 ounces
Additional not 100% necessary (maybes)
Corkscrew
Wire strippers
Small pliers.
Second blade

My thoughts so far are the:
Leatherman juice
Jdr tools
Anything else?

Victorinox alox soldier. They stopped production in 2008, but you can get them for cheap. These are the best knife value available.

As far as a Multi Tool goes, I can't offer much in the way of suggestions other than saying that I really like all my Leathermans and that I carry The Wave most often. That being said, I do have a suggestion on your knife choices. You are looking at two very different knives. On one side you've got your more gentlemanly Large Sebenza with Damascus and Micarta inlays. I would use this knife for lighter duty tasks and probably would only carry it at times where I was out for a night or when I had to get a little dressy. On the other side you have the tough as nails, hard use, overbuilt XM-18. I would carry the XM-18 for harder use tasks and heavy cutting. The Sebenza would be a better slicer and the XM-18 would be a better workhorse. You have to ask yourself what you're going to be using the knife for.

I agree with Tony on the issue of which folder between the Hinderer or Seb. They're very different knives. A micarta Seb would be a great choice w/o the demascus option, as it'll make a great EDC/EDU folder. The Hinderer would too, but as stated, it's heavier duty than the Seb.

As to a secondary knife, I'd suggest a SAK. The Spartan's a great choice. It can be carried in the pocket or in a nylon pouch on your belt. It's not heavy, but has pretty much all of the tools you mentioned.

I don't have any of the latest, lighter multi-tools, but I do have an old Leatherman that is just great. It's relatively small (The old black coated one), but has what I need w/o being too bulky.

On the SAK, I have a Spartan & 1-hand opener, which also has some of the tools you mentioned.

If you want lighter weight, I'd say go for the SAK (Spartan would be my suggestion).

Good luck.

+1 for the Victorinox Alox Soldier. I have one that I carry on a daily basis, and another one that I keep stored since they are no longer made. You can still find them on eBay.

I also recommend the Sebenza over the Hinderer.

+1 to Victorinox. Any of them will serve you well. I'll mention a couple of my favorites...

You can have all of your 3 primary requirements covered with the humble Victorinox Rambler. I put mine on my keychain and never looked back. It even has some extra tools for you. There is another model without the scissors, if you want it even smaller.

Another great SAK is the Tourist, which was discontinued. You can still find them on ebay and other web sites. It is the same pattern as the Spartan, only it is a little bit smaller in all dimensions.

i know this is a weird suggestion, but if your 3 listed needs are extremely important to you i would look at a small fixed blade...
you can pry and beat on a knife like the Becker bk11. i do. and for 30 bucks its a hard to beat deal. it is a small knife but severely beefy, and has the Kabar warranty, so should hell fallout and the knife break, your covered.
and on top of that it has a great bottle opener on the handle.

if you feel that you have to have an actual multitool, go with the Juice.
