How can I tell if a Spyderco knife is a second?

Does anyone have pictures of what the mark Spyderco puts on their seconds?

Thanks.

There will be a small triangular mark cut out of the spine of the blade to denote it as a second. Don't have any pictures as an example though. Sorry.

Here's a shot of one on a G-10 Police

Notch is sometimes V shaped, sometimes U shaped, definitely looks intentional rather that like a "ding". It will always be located on the right side of the spine, between the tang and the thumb hole. Just got a Kiwi like that a couple weeks back from and eBay auction, the notch on it is VERY small and U shaped, but still obviously intentional. Seller, of course, claimed to be unaware of what a "second" was. They did offer to take it back, but, since I'm having a really hard time figuring out what made it a second, I decided to just consider it one more variation. :D

Thank you for the picture. That looks exactly what I have on one of my Spyderflys. I only paid 30 bucks for it, and the knife seems flawless (except for the machined notch in it). I can't complain one bit about how it flips, and the spring latch works just fine. I haven't figured out what made it a second, but it's got the VG10 blade. Maybe someone might know why some of the VG10 ones were marked as seconds?

Either way, it seems like a damn good knife and I've been playing with it non stop since it came in the mail. I don't know what would have made them second it.

Anybody have a pic of one w/ thumb "grip" notches on the top/back of the blade that has the seconds mark?

That is exactly what I was wondering. I'll bet you they place the mark directly above the hole, where the thumb grooves end, in those instances.

Best wishes,

Ok, let me rephrase my observation, the notch will always be on the righthand side of the spine. Exact placement may vary, but it will be located closer to the tang than to the tip, and in a spot where it cannot be confused with traction grooves or anything else.

Sometimes it is hard to distinquish unless you know you have a second. This was bought at the annual seconds sale. It is a second and it has the notch almost hidden in the non sharpened serrations for thumb traction on the spine. Its more U shaped than V and were it not for the fact that I know its a second you could just about miss this one.

EDIT: here are some shots from differnent angles on one that is tougher than most to see.

My mark is on the left side on the blade side of my spyderfly. I wasn't sure if it was a second or if it was just a ding, but aside from opposite placement.. I'm sure it's still a second. After a bit more inspection, my handles are slightly out of alignment but that doesn't seem to have any effect on flipping. I think I can bend them back into proper placement if given enough time to tinker around with it.
