Secret of installing cobra D guard?

What's the deal with this? Is there a "best practice" way of removing the tension clip that binds one side of the pin sets? These clips are really hard to remove and I'm afraid I'm going to break or warp them. Very frustrating.
 
Never mind. I just yanked it off with needlenose pliers. I hope I can get it back on. They are small.
