Hey friends I’m getting a couple of san mai items from cold steel, has anyone had any issues with the secure ex sheath scratching the san mai I have a bit of ocd and it would drive me nuts to see little scratches! Thanks.

Yes, the secure ex wears on the coating of my coated recon scout and it annoys me. I would get a custom leather one or an”southern comfort” kudex sheaf from whitewatersheathes. They look awesome.

Thanks for the response, I’ll check out those southern comforts I’ve heard good things!

Gents. No plastic of any kind is going to be harder than STEEL, so the only thing that could scratch your blades is debris trapped between the sheath and the blade. This could happen with any sheath material.

Now, COATED blades are a different animal, because now you have to worry about a plastic scratching... the coating. Which might or might not be harder than the sheath materiial.

My bet is that SanMai blades from Cold Steel are not coated, so you should be good to go with any material for the sheath as long as you keep it clean.

The only scratching I have experienced with Cold Steel is on a pair of O-1 Laredo Bowies with securex sheath. Brand new out of the box there was a dragging sound as the knife was drawn from its sheath. No dirt or debris as the knives were brand new, purchased at the Cold Steel retail store in Ventura.

San Mai Trail Masters have a codura sheath, no scratching on blade. San Mai Laredo has Leather sheath, no scratching on blade.

Yes, the first few scratches, one does notice.

But once you've really used the knife and put some mileage on it, as it were, you dont notice any more.

In fact, honest wear makes it YOUR knife.

Just use the snot out of the knife, as it was designed for.

Its a Cold Steel, it can take it.
