Secure ex dulling?

G’day all I am just wandering if the recent cold steel models with secure ex sheaths still cause them to dull? I love cold steel but some of the sheaths seem to dull my blades hopefully they have changed it. Cheers.

I have a recent 3v Magnum Tanto II with secure ex. I have noticed no dulling caused by the sheath and I have pulled it out of the sheath many times. Keep in mind though, like with all fixed blades, I am careful not to rub the edge on the sheath.

I don’t know about the ColdSteel Securex sheaths but my Spyderco StreetBeat Liteweight has a sheath that seems to have fiberglass or something in the plastic material. This stuff absolutely dulls the edge of my Street Beat and to be honest I am quite upset with Spyderco for shipping their knife with a sheath woth such a major flaw. This is coming from a company that claims they design their knives “from the edge out” in otherwords prioritizing the edge.

The effect is so bad you can put the knife in razor sharp and after 6 or 7 draws where the edge contacts the inside of the sheath the knife will no longer cleanly slice paper.

I honestly wish knife companies would refrain from using this terrible family of composite plastics for sheaths. Granted any plastic sheath, even kydex will dull an edge slightly if it makes contact with the edge while drawing or putting the knife in. However on plastics like kydex the effect is so minor as to be nearly negligable.

I know how disappointing it is to have a blade you love with a terrible sheath that just scrapes the edge off every time you use it. Seems like the only remedy is to get a custom sheath made. Another fix is to glue a little strip of cut credit card along the inside of the sheath where the edge would contact. Just make sure there is enough room for the knife to still fit in without an issue before you glue anything.

Hey mate I actually have the spyderco street Bowie and the sheath dulls it, it’s a shame because I like how the sheath sits and the g clip! My ronin 2 sheath however does not dull the blade.

It seems to depend on a) the material and b) the sheath design. Btw there is enough room in the Street Beat sheath for you to cut a thin stip
Of credit card and glue it down the inside of the sheath where the edge makes contact. This way the edge hits the credit card which dulls the edge far less than the sheath material just make sure everything fits before you put any glue on anything.

Thanks for the info mate I’ll give the card method a try, have you done it on any bigger sheaths like an srk??

I’ve only tried it on my Street Beat so far. I imagine you would have to put two strips of credit card end to end in the SRK sheath since the blade is longer. Also the street beat sheath has a flat surface on the inside facing the edge. Thus it is a good place to glue that strip of credit card.

I haven’t owned an srk for a while so I can’t remember what the sheath is like.
