Secure Ex Sheath Dulling My Blade?!

Hey guys/gals.
I was wondering has anyone else have this experience? I recently acquired a GI Tanto (which is fantastic for the money)
It came from the factory sharp, not super duper sharp like some of there folders but good enough to where i didnt feel the need to sharpen it. But I have noticed that during my time fondling the blade before i had a chance to really test it out on a day hike next week. That the edge has considerably dulled! To the point that it no longer slices paper like when it did from the factory. So what I want to know is this normal? Or does it take time for the sheath to break/wear in?
Thanks!
-Eric

Pic for fun lol

Make a point to draw the knife up and out with pressure on the spine. That keeps the edge from trying to slice hard plastic, which will dull steel.

I noticed that my old spike series knives dulled from being taken in and out. The new bowie spike is still sharp though. I have removed it from it's sheath at least 20 times.

OH YEAH. sadly ive gotten rid of several cold steel knives because of the sheath. and had to swap some i wasnt willing to part with. i only have one out of ten that doesnt have this problem. i sent them all in and got the same response... "i dont see anything wrong, but heres a new sheath" which still had the same problem. i tried wrapping the blade in a damp paper towel to scrub the inside, and it was clean. it must be making contact with a screw or rivet or something

um, maybe a brass knife, but i can whittle kydex/secure ex/ polypropelene with no dulling . i tried the edge of the sheath before sending it back. fiberglass maybe would. plastic cutting boards also dont dull knives

My SM3GK was being grooved...I mean thumbnail detectable scratches from the Secure-ex. I stuck a fine half-round file into the thing, and just lightly "went over" everything it could reach. There was definitely SOMETHING in there, it fell out during the process, looked like a chunk of the metal used to make the "open rivets", like copper maybe w/ the customary black coating! Problem resolved.

Secure-ex will "dull the pee-water" outa steel, no doubt though. Take a razor-sharp blade and run it back and forth at 90 degrees on Secure-ex in a inconspicuous(sp?) area. Lemme know how it turns out vs. kydex.

Yeah Kwon,

Thats the only way I ever draw any khukuri, no matter who makes it, alas, the grooves continued, and I fixed its sheath.

Yeah, I've had my Kobun dull when drawing. If I pay attention to how I draw it, I can avoid hitting the edge though.

My older Kobun is like that. I can put a screamin' edge on it, and after a few trips in and out of the sheath it's dulled noticeably (this is without cutting anything, just drawing and sheathing). Not butter knife dull, but no longer razor sharp. On the other hand, neither of my PeaceKeepers nor my Shanghai Shadow have this problem. I guess the edges just aren't as likely to touch the sheath on these as some others are. Isn't Secure-Ex basically FRN? If so, I can see how the glass fibers could be hard/abrasive enough to take off a razor edge with little effort.

I had to junk my Kobun sheath because of this dulling. If you run a thin, sharp edge, secure-ex will kill it in short order. A kydex sheath that doesn't contact the edge was the solution for me.

Theres a YouTube vid made by a guy named Virtuovice, discussing and demonstrating Secure-Exs' recurrent dulling of a razor sharp knife.

And when I say sharp, this guy uses Japanese waterstones, and its a whole new level.

We are currently filming our new PROOF videos.
All of the team have a 5am start :)

I'm excited for those! Will be looking for code 4 tests.

As for the kobun, I don't think mine's edge touched the sheath... Maybe I was drawing it Differently. I miss my kobun, it broke (because I was being dumb). I got it at the booth at the NRA convention when it was in Pittsburgh. It was cool seeing mr. Thompson. I'm half tempted to buy another, but the roach belly is doing fine!

I seen his video, and there is something in my secure-ex sheath scratching my trail master. Starting to tick me off to the point of dropping $70 on a custom kydex sheath. The secure-ex is badly flawed.

Guess I was pretty aggravated after posting in this thread, I plopped down $70 simolians for a kydex job later that evening (yesterday). I just can't justify having a $145 blade living in a $2 sheath, my girlfriend made a good analogy, like putting dirty underwear on a clean a**.

Yup, my leatherneck tanto gets visible edge deformation even when I am carefull about drawing and putting it back. And to all those saying you have to be careful about how you sheath the knife, I cut on plastic cutting boards everyday and I don't have these issues.

And these are cheap kitchen knives. Not knives marketed as "combat" knives.

I could take my rodent 9 and cut that POS sheath in half without even dulling it.

New sheath and working on a good convex edge.
