Secure-Ex sheath dulls edge

I love Cold Steel products and have owned them for over 15 years. One of my Recon 1s has been carried every single day since 2010! And my Recon Scout saved my life even when i drew it once to dissuade a bad guy.

But I find the sheaths tend to dull the edge of my fixed blades. Does anyone know of and modifications one can make to the sheaths to limit edge contact with the sheath?

Even with care to not draw the knife into the edge of the sheath, the simple act of carrying the knives with them moving as you walk tends to dull the edge.

Custom kydex sheaths are expensive where i live and with Covid they're really hard to get.

Is there any way one can modify the sheath to reduce this? I was thinking heating up and denting in the sides of the sheath a bit to force the spine of the blade to ride higher against the top of the sheath to stop the edge rubbing on the sheath (yes i know it will scratch the knife).

Has anyone tried this or some other modification?

There aren’t any ways to alter the sheath. I have run into scuffing on sides of blade but never dulling of the edge. Maybe consider sending the knife back and trying another? That isn’t supposed to happen.

I've noticed this tool.

I suppose you could drill out the rivets in the sheath and add some padding along where the edge would be.

As a fan of Cold Steel, I’m also disappointed by this. I bought a Kabar sheath for my Leatherneck SF and I’m pretty happy with that. My Kobun and Recon Tanto however are still in their stock sheaths.

One way of mitigating this is being mindful of drawing the blade. Press against the blade’s spine as you draw, not against the edge. That way, you minimize contact between the edge and the glass interior.

So far, this has worked for my Recon Tanto. No noticeable dulling yet.

I even made my own thread about making my own sheath for my Recon Tanto since even carrying it will dull my blade. So now I just keep it around wrapped in something.

Won't go into deails, but I had great deal of issues because of this, even family issues (someone got injured by my knife). This is really off-putting and I wish they offered ANY alternative, I'd even pay more just to get leather, kydex or even nylon just so it doesn't have glass in it.

Yeah, the SecureEx sheath will definitely dull a fresh edge. I can’t think of a way to modify it in a way that will provide lasting results.

If you can find some leather you could stitch a sheath up for it.

I recall reading that one... hard luck man, hope everyone is ok!

Fortunatley things are so far so good. She is better and will fully recover, no tendons, muscles or major blood vessels were cut.

But yeah, threads about such sheath issues exist, my thread wasn't first one or last one, and I know they'll keep coming up too.

Four year old thread, but I'm wondering if any secure ex sheaths for double edged knives ( mini leatherneck?) dull the edges or are ok?

My drop forged boot knife from ~2020 had no issue. I wouldn’t expect a concrete answer here, as it depends on the model, era of possible sheath revisions, and normal blade width variances.

I have this problem with my new Kobun. Love the knife and the sheath was one of the reasons I wanted the kobun as the design makes for easy carry. After having the knife about a week and practicing drawing the knife from different carry positions I noticed the blade would be very dull even though it had not been used to cut anything. I would touch it up to razor sharp then the next day after carrying and practicing draws it would be dull again. At first I could not figure out how the knife was going dull overnight. I touched it up to razor sharp again and just left it on a shelf for 2 days and of course it remained razor sharp. Yes it is the sheath which really sucks because there is not much that can be done to fix the issue. If you draw the knife very carefully it helps but still will dull the blade. I still love the knife and it has again ignited my interest in Cold Steel fixed blades and tantos specifically.
