Securing blades for travel?

Since, due to recent events, innocent civilians can no longer carry knives on board aircraft, I was wondering about methods of keeping your knives safe and secure during the flight, and more importantly, baggage handling.

Seems they're checking almost all bags now, searching for bombs or what have you... a good way for them to see what kind of valuables are in yuor bags.

I was thinking put all my blades in a knife roll (the ones that will fit, anyway), then put the roll into a smaller bag that can be locked, put the smaller bag into your luggage, then lock the luggage.
A bit extreme?

Lets hear it.

I guess it depends on how many and what kind of knives you are planning on taking. I just did some travelling and I just put a couple of knives in one of the compartments in my suitcase. The knives were a small neck knife and a Spyderco Police. There was no problem transporting them this way. I was never asked to open a suitcase for inspection so I am not sure what would have happened if I was.

If you are looking to take a lot of knives, or ones that might be considered intimidating by the inspectors, then you may want to have them well secured.

What they are mostly doing these days is "random" full inspection of checked baggage. If you have a locked compartment in your bag they will insist that you open it. As long as they do this in your presence (my experience so far and the only practical way to search locked luggage) you can show them what is in your special box and then lock it back up again. For maximal security you need your lock box to be securely fastened to the inside of your suitcase (so the box can't be stolen) and difficult to open without your consent.

By the way. Showing up at the last minute and going standby seems to maximize your chance of being "randomly" inspected.
