Securing thong tube in a slipjoint?

I used a thong tube for the first time in a slipjoint in place of a peened pin. Should I have flared it in place? Every one I’ve seen does not appear flared. I flared it slightly and it started to crack the scales.

Yes, but I think i got a little overzealous with the flaring process.
