hi all,

could one of my fellow forumites shed some light on a question. what is security like at disney world florida. i would like to slip my spyderco military in my pocket for descrete carry. do i have to pass through a metal detector or are they just searching large bags like pocket books.

thanks in advance,

high

There is absolutely no policy at all. They check inside purses and in baby strollers. Big fuggin deal. You could take any number of lethal things into the park if you wanted to. Yes, and I bet they wouldn't even care. Nothing wrong with having a knife to cut apples and open your kid's new toys.

Edited to add: Last time I visited Disneyland (I know it's not disneyworld, but it's basically the same thing), I carried my SAK Huntsman and used it all the time, in front of employees and everyone else. No one gave me any crap.

One word of advise.......maybe leave your shirt untucked so it covers your front pockets. If one of their Security guards spot the pocket clip...it might draw attention to you.
Maybe yes...maybe no. But I hope it is O.K to do it. I'm going on their cruise again & I know all luggage has to go through the metal detectors.... :(
Looks like I cannot bring any toys with me :grumpy:

They do a bag search and not a very thorough one. I kept my pocket knife in an inside pocket of a diaper bag that they searched. No problem. Just don't advertise (pocket clip, etc.) and you won't have any problems. Any they do have a policy of no knives among other things listed in the phamlet they mailed us.

All it takes is one guy who's irresponsible with a blade and all of a sudden, everyone is going through metal detectors before entering one of the world's happiest places. My question is, do you really need a blade in there? You definitely need a bottle of water, some moleskin and sunglasses, but you don't need a knife. Think of Disney this way... you're entering the world's largest nursery school where most of the kids aren't supervised... if you use the knife, lose the knife or hurt someone...

What are you gonna cut the moleskin with?

How about opening a bag of chips or a film package or one of those annoying clam-shell plastic packages that everything seems to come in these days and which are virtually bullet-proof?

What if one of your kids gets gum in his hair? What are you gonna cut it out with?

Even the teachers and adults at nursery schools need knives.

You're implying that Mr. High's knive is some sort of evil thing that has no place in "the peaceful Magic Kingdom." It is not an evil thing but a tool that can help contribute to the magic.

Knives, like guns, are not evil or bad in themselves, but they can be used to do evil or bad things. Disneyland, like airlines, didn't used to check for any "weapons" because society was more polite and the crazies were kept in check. All that has changed. Yes, you and I would use a knife for legitimate purposes only, but others might not. They don't advertise it, but Disneyland experienced a knifefight between rival gang members at a grad night a couple of years ago. Several serious injuries. When you are the single-most popular place for people under the age of 10, you have to be very careful what goes through the gate. If you really think your daughter is going to get gum in her hair, or if you are not strong enough to open plastic packages, take a small pair of scissors. Those still haven't been used to attack anyone in the Magic Kingdom. :p

... you don't NEED a knife ...

What a pitiful attitude. Everything not forbidden is compulsory. Big Brother is watching YOU. A couple of gangstas get crazy and every pot-bellied dad has got to check his SAK at the gate. Don't you guys have any pride left at all?

Even the teachers and adults at nursery schools need knives.
You bet. ESPECIALLY the adults need knives. :)

"& Mean-Spirited Republican" - got the last part right! :D I guess being a bit older, I don't have as much to prove. I have a CCW (not an easy thing to get in California) and I carry a firearm anytime I'm in the city of Los Angeles. But I have never felt the "need" to carry one in Disneyland. Not because "Big Brother" wouldn't like it (I did my protesting back in the Sixties and he hasn't bothered me since ;) ), but simply because it's probably the safest place in L.A.! For the same reason I don't carry the knife. I simply respect the rules because I understand them. On the mean streets of the city, I carry both at all times.

I don't carry firearms. I do carry knives as tools. I would use a knife if that were the best weapon I had available and I needed a weapon, but it rarely is anyway. I don't agree that the very occasional misuse of a knife by obviously antisocial people should have any impact on my peaceful utility carry.

I am a free citizen of a republic that still proclaims my right to go about my business as long as I don't interfere with others going about theirs. But that's all theory. In practice, we are under the increasing compulsion of laws passed by those who feel they can trade liberty for security.

At Disneyland they don't have metal detectors, but if they see a clip, they will make you take it back to your car.

FWIW, they used to sell Nordic knives at the Scandanavian shop in Epcot. I even talked about hunting with one of the employees there. If you purchased a knife, they would give it to you at the gate.
If you feel compelled to take a knife, why not a small SAK? The 1 inch blade and siccors are more than up to the task of opening a bag of chips or cutting some moleskin.

In the Florida one, they still sell the Nordic knives, except they have to ship it home for you after you buy it.

Hey, if they still sponsor gay days where I need to have second thoughts about the cleanliness of some of the rides, then I can bring my knife with me just because I want to. I want to have knife days at Disney!

It has? Actually, according to an FBI report issued May 24, violent crime continued to decline in 2003 and violent crimes have been dropping steadily over the past five years. Decreases were reported in all regions of the United States. I know this isn't exactly what this thread's about (and I DEFINITELY think knife regs at amusement parks are bogus), but I just wanted to do my part to debunk the fear myth I feel is paralyzing America.

I was there in March and had similar concerns...after the first day at the various parks - my concerns were gone. I carried my Sebbie, my WAVE and my E1 and E2e everyday. Not really even looking in the bag that I carried some of it in! Carry away!

Well, you're absolutely right-I don't need a knife THERE..

Do just like you do everywhere else. Take a legal knife, put it in your pocket, and leave it there until you need it.
