Security?

My wife and I went to the North Carolina State Fair last night. At the gate there were five police officers checking bags and such as we entered. My wife's bag was checked and the police looked me up and down. Now I'm OK with this, but the irony is that once we were inside there were three makers exhibiting knives and tomahawks. From all appearenace they were for sale, and on two tables they were out in the open and easily accessible.

Now to my point. I'm glad that knives and such are a part of the Fair and I think they should be. I would have liked to have seen even more. I guess I'm just feeling like we are kidding ourselves with this whole notion of security.

I won't even go into how easy it would be to get a killing instrument on to a plane no matter the level of security; short of boarding naked.

Any thoughts?

The fact is that any writing instrument commonly carried by 99% of airline passengers can be just as leathal as the box cutters carried by the terrorists of 9-11. The answer is not increased security before boarding, but IMHO arming pilots, crew, and air marshals. As long as firearms are not accessable to the few psychos that may get on a plane...

Well I don't want to get on my soapbox, but I don't think my feelings on this are unique.

Just my two cents.

I guess that's what makes terrorism attractive to the extremists, who exist in relatively small numbers. Security measures can't really stop terrorists' attacks. We must eliminate the perps. Giving our CIA/FBI some teeth will go a long way, but I feel we must also reexamine what rights we give foreigners (eg. students) who are here on visas, or anyone else LE deems suspicious. Our free society is made-to-order for terroristic opportunities.
