See my custom serrations

I like the suttle look. I have bene trying my hand at Filework on the spine of a few cheapos and most of them turned out like serrations LOL Oh well, Trial and Error:)

Heck of a nice job fulloflead, i would bet it will work just fine, i usually don't care for serrated knifes, but i like yours.

Cool! I would like serrations if they were on belly, and also ones with flat tips that you can just sharpen over. Looks like that's what you've done here. I bet they would work great. Not as agressive as "SpyderEdge" but smoother.

Looks nice.
I think those will give you some bite, but your not going to like what they do on anything small enough to slip inside them. Having the corners on the cutting edge will make a difference on things like rope, but I think your going to want to take a rat tail needle file and round those out, so they don't have so much of a shoulder on them. Not bigger, just beveled shoulders.
If you look closely at spyderco's serrations, they're ground so that all edges of the serration are sharp. They don't hang up on stuff.

Just a thought, give those a try. Its nice clean work. I always gouge the heck out of stuff when I try to start filing grooves like that.

Ha-ha! Funny that I just sat down to write that my serrations have their drawbacks and you wrote this!:D

I just tried to open a rubbery-plastic bag of bird treats for my bird and it was a hassle - the blade kept getting stuck - where it should've opened in one clean swipe.

Yes, you're absolutely right and I was about to say that the INSIDE of the serrations need to be sharpened at a lesser angle so that the inside of the grooves will cut too.

But that's OK! It's an EXPERIMENT and I can keep going with it. I can try to fix them or just try it again.

Nichols makes a set of needle files, for dirt cheap that you might look at if you don't already have what you need. Lowes carries them. Actually 2 sets, one with wood handles and one without. I got the set without handles because they are slightly smaller, and have done TONS of filework and they still cut very well except corners/edges on the square, triangle, and half round. Thats not working with hardned steel, but they seem to be pretty good quality.
Chances are they would dull pretty quick on hardened VG-10, but they might be your best bet. Only other options I can think of are diamond burrs in a dremel (with lots of cold water to dip the blade in frequently!)
Have fun :)

Edited to add: Only reason I brought that up in the first place is I learned the hard way too :D

Cool. I might have to go out and buy some more tools for my experiment. There's a Lowes near me. ;)
