Seeing as I can't get a Randall anytime soon,

I figured that the Cold Steel Clones, the R1 Military Classic and the even cheaper version, the ODA will have to suffice for the time being.

The R1 smells like a Randall, looks like a Randall and feels like a Randall, and although we know it's not, it will do for now while I put my name on the waiting list.

I was surprised at how nicely the R1 was made. Although not as well finished as the Randall, the slightly lighter knife handled very well and was very sharp out of the box. A few strokes on the Spyderco Ultra-Fine stone and on the strop made it hair-popping sharp in only a matter of minutes.

The ODA I purchased because I wanted a kydex sheath for the R1... I was quite disappointed to find out that although the blade profile was essentially identical, there were in fact, tiny differences which prevented the R1 from fitting into the ODA sheath. However, I was quite surprised to find that the 420 steel on the ODA to be quite sharp and if it can come from the factory with such a nice edge, I think I can certainly put a better edge on it.
I really dislike Kraton handles and the fact that this knife has a Kraton handle as well as a Kraton hand guard did not impress me much, but what did impress me was that it was under $60 US dollars from an internet discounter.

I'm going to put them both to some use and report back in a few weeks. I might even do a passaround with the ODA... we'll see what happens...

If you want a Randall "lite" you might want to check out BlackJack Knives' Model 1-7. They discontinued making these a while ago and may be hard to find. I have had one for about 10 years now and it has held up nicely to the beatings I have subjected it to. I'll post a pic if I can get my scanner working again.
