I accidentally started a thread in Gadgets and Gear without knowing there was a Hunting and Fishing area. Don't blame me, I'm new here. :D

Hello, another bit of assistance needed today. When younger I used to fish regularly and had some decent gear. But after years of storage and several cross-country moves, I find myself a rod or two short.

Now my 4-year-old boy wants to fish all the time so I'd better pick something up.

He has an entry-level spinning rod and reel combo (Quantum Snapshot) that should last him for many years. At least until he gets a job and buys his own. :)

Me, I'd like something a bit nicer, at least on par with the Berkley Stinger that broke at some point within the last 15 years. It'll be matched to an older Shimano TX120Q. Something in the $50 range would be priced right. I'm also more interested in owning something a little less-common than the usual WalMart and K-Mart models, although I'm confident those are perfectly usable.

Specifically, how are the in-house brands at Cabela's or Bass Pro? Are they at least as good as the Shakespeare Ugly Stik or other common brands?

Looking for a M-L action, 6'6", two-piece.

In addition I might be interested in a light or ultra-light spinning rod and reel. Having trouble finding a light reel with the lever release for one-hand casting though. Anyone have a recommendation?
So after a few hours of online shopping, I decided that the Bass Pro Tourney Special is just what I'm looking for, specifically model #38-130-225-00. Specs seem to match my needs and the reviews are positive. Anyone have any experience with these? Any other rods I should consider in the same price range? (My second choice was a Berkley Lightning Rod.)

I've also decided, since I'm ordering anyway, to pick up an ultra-light setup. Always wanted one. Anyone have comments on these components:
Pflueger President Micro UltraLight reel

It doesn't have a one-hand trigger, but those seem few and far between on ultralight reels. :(
Match this to a Bass Pro MicroLight Graphite rod (1pc, 5'), and I should be good to go?

Sure wish there was one of those big Bass Pro stores nearby...

Ah heck, I pushed the button. Will post some review notes when the equipment arrives and I get a chance to try it out.

The Tourney Special will be just fine. Better than a clumsy ugly stick. I have a couple of Bass Pro rods, not the ones you mentioned, and find them a good value.

I've got an Ugly Stick and don't care for it. It's rated Medium action, but it's ~really~ stiff. Probably save it for bottom catfishing or some such.

Ya know, I get so mad when something I bought 20 years ago is discontinued and I can't get another.

That Berkley Stinger was a freakin' great rod... :(

I bet you'll like your new rod better.
Great advances have been made in fishing rod technology :)
