I am not sure if I am posting in the appropriate area. I am a student and instructor of kung fu and looking for a good set of combat functional deer hook knives. These also go by the names of Mandarin Duck knives, crescent moon knives and are sometimes referred to as swords. I know that Jason Quin from deerhornknives.com has a great selection but due to his extensive injuries his orders are backed up. I guess what I am looking for is a knife maker who would be willing to take the challenge of making a wonderful pair of these blades with total functional capability. I would not want more than a half edge on them since they are very dangerous to train with, but I am looking for them to be made with a quality of steel that would hold a good solid edge if I ever wanted to sharpen them. You know... in case the world does go post apocalyptic in our life time.
I have passed my original pair on to my daughter. My teacher designed and made them from solid iron horse shoes... three horseshoes went into each crescent blade... and then wrapped the handle in fine cow hide. He had put a half edge on them. The dimensions are 14" L x 8 1/2" W x 1/8" thick and each blade weighs about 1.5 lbs to 2 lbs.
