Looking for input on this small head. Interested in what it is used for, and how I should hang it. Straight handle like a hawk or more of a hatchet handle? Slip fit or as I would hang a normal axe or hatchet? It has no makers markings on it, and the eye is about 3/25 of an inch long and under a 1/2 inch wide. it is pretty close to palm size. I think I picked it up at a flea market. Really want to give it a cool handle, but not sure were to begin.

Looks like a Chinese or Taiwan made hatchet. The small eye is because they used a fiberglass handles. You could try a wood handle, but I wouldn’t expect it to last. In my experience Small eyes like that don’t do well with wood.

Looks like a cast steel head. Nothing wrong with that as long as it's been heat treated. Looks like it could be fun to modify.

How heavy is it?

For smaller eyes, it's fine to wedge and hang on a handle of hickory, hop hornbeam, or osage orange. The lighter the tomahawk head, the less impact momentum the handle has to withstand--so really light tomahawks (head weights under 6 ounces) can last a long time. I've seen tomahawks with eyes much smaller than that.

burninatorzw burninatorzw thanks tor the input, I really appreciate it. This little thing weighs in at 7.4 ounces. I am resigned to the fact that I will likely have to make a handle for it myself. I have been leaning toward wedge and hang method. Any thoughts on length of handle? I was going to do a straight tomahawk style. I saw some 14 inch straight tool style handles at the store and was going to pick one up, I also have some Ash I could make one from.

Thanks

I'd probably go between 10-1/2" to 13" on the handle length, that's similar in size to a lot of historic belt axes--could be handy for butchering game of harvesting fire starter materials. A little swell toward the butt end for better grip retention. But asthetics are important on this personal peice, so the head design may look more proportional on a longer handle.

I would seek hickory because of the small eye size but ash may hold up depending on your handle design. Probably wouldn't throw it--doubts on ash holding up to the abuse.
