For me, one of this first things to go in anything like that is some aluminium foil.

As I see it the main point of keeping the gear in a tin rather than a waterproof pouch is that you can boil in it. If you've ever tried you'll know that you don't get much in a tobacco tin let alone an Altoids tin. It doesn't take much foil at all to make a 2 pint pot to boil water in. That amount will fold down very flat and weight very little. When you add in that it can be used for a whole bunch of other stuff too I believe it is a real folly to omit it. It has fantastic properties.

This is a good idea. I'm going to grab some HD aluminum foil and give it a try.
