Seen the Bear Grylls sheath? Would love it for the Esee 4

OK, so I am one of those guys who doesn't mind Bear Grylls. I follow him on Twitter and he linked to a video of his new Gerber Knife. Wasn't too thrilled with the knife (though not too bad), but the sheath was pretty awesome. It has a fire steel built in at the bottom and a sharpening stone behind the sheath. Very smooth integration. Would love to have something like this for my Esee 4.

Just FYI--I haven't read any other reviews other than his own, so the whole thing may suck.

That's all. Just thought I would share my thought.

I didnt realize he was coming out with a whole line of stuff.

I have to admit, Im dying to check out the fixed blade. :) That parang looks great too!

I pre-ordered one to try out. I enjoyed beating on my LMFII, let's see how the BG holds up. Ultimately, I don't think it will replace my RC-4.

Looks like a modified LMF knife to me, right down to including a sharpening-stone on the sheath. I do like the way the firesteel is incorporated into the sheath design, though.
I get the impression Gerber gave Bear their knife and said "what would you change to make this better?"

All of it looks pretty good. I do like the sheath for the fixed blade, nice features.

He totally burnt himself demonstrating that firesteel.:D

All it is is a Discovery Channel-ified Prodigy-I've got one, the sheath is great. Alot of people dislike the knife because of it but it retains the blade, it's quiet, durable and has multiple mounting options. Allaround, a good utilitarian design. The blade itself is super ergo and very well designed, but I swear it holds the worst edge of any knife I own-and that includes Tailor Cutlery's "surgical stainless"...

1) I'm not a fan of Bear and his antics - good showmanship, bad message about what survival entails

2) I'm not a fan of the LMF, but I think I may have had a bad product

3) The sharpener looks interesting - could take a DMT and embed it into the sheath somehow and get the same result, IMHO.

4) I think the velcro tabs on the sheath look a little puny and not convinced they would stand up to hard use in the bush.

just mount the ESEE pouch for the 5 and 6, it works on the 3 and 4 too. they hold and Altoids tin, so you can have more kit on the knife than the BG knife has.

if you want a sharpener on the sheath, Fallkniven has diamond sharpeners that come with 3M tape that would let you mount it to the sheath under the pouch.

D3t and D4t
... sold with a double coated pressure sensitive adhesive tape which allows you to fasten it on any flat spot. The VHB 5925F tape is extremely strong and will harden permanently within 24 hrs.
the diamond only sharpeners are under $20

firesteels, available everywhere, or get the ESEE kit and a holder to bolt to the sheath, or just put a smaller one in the tin.

Fox (or similar) whistles are inexpensive and widely available.

sooo, i think you can make one of the ESEEs a better system than the Bear Grills signature knives.

I agree. The Gerber Bear knife " system" thing seems kind of hokey to me. With all the great stuff Esee has and other superior items you can buy , I'd rather have some individuality and creativity putting together my own knife kit for my own uses. The whole affair seems like a pre-packaged gimicky affair. Maybe I'm kind of old-fashioned , but a solid knife ( Esee of course) with a firesteel ranger-banded on the sheath is good enough for me. Fallkniven DC4 in the survival kit and I'm good to go. I'll take a boatload of Esee 4 Kydex before anything made by Gerber. I'll also take an Esee survival card too , before a BG survival "pamphlet" that probably recommends questionable survival practices. ;)

IIRC...these are available for like 60 bucks.

Not too bad really...though I think I, personally, will pass.

I think its a pretty good idea. Not everyone gets into putting their kits together like we do, but still enjoy the outdoors and could use more survival oriented gear. This would be a great product for them. The integrated sharpener and firesteel is a great idea IMO. I doubt ill ever own one since i could put together a better kit for a little more money and some creativity, but it definitely has its place.

btw-I dont get all the hate that Bear gets. I wouldnt follow his style of survival because i was taught differently, but that doesnt mean it wouldnt work. Its just another way to skin a cat. I think its safe to say that the man has more experience in varying terrain than most anyone on this forum, which is saying a lot and does deserve some respect IMO.

I think it's a decent set-up. I had an LMF, it was a pretty good knife IMO. I let it go because I don't care for serrations much but it was alright.

I'm looking to pick one up and give it a workout, bet it'll do just fine.

For me, the "system" aspect of it is the main part of the appeal. Of course, a pile or strapped-together-collection of great parts will always be superior, but imagine the Esee kydex with the Esee firesteel, or something similar they designed, inegrated so smoothly in with a sharpener behind it all. The whole package purposely an specifically designed to smoothly work together. I think it would be cool.

He totally burnt himself demonstrating that firesteel.:D

lotsa sparks tho!

i never seem to get much spark from the damn things. don't know why. i've tried various strikers, different firesteels, etc. and only get a few sparks. :(

that's why i like my orange Windmill lighter. :D

I'm going to be honest, the only thing which really puts me off is that it only comes in part serrated. I don't get on with part serrated in a larger blade.
why can't they make a plain edge only version?
however, the "scout knife" looks like an interesting bit of kit, and on folding blades I don't mind the part-serrations.

It's hard to trust a knife from a company that won't even openly list what their steel is. I have some older Gerbers that were ATS-34 that would take an edge pretty well but since then I've had a couple that were butter blades.

I like the concept of the Bear knife, especially the firesteel in the sheath and the sharpener on the back. The sharpener has a lot of cheap Rambo knife vibe in many circles but with a good diamond sharpener it could be very handy.

Velcro doesn't belong anywhere on a serious blade in my opinion. Velcro wears out over time, fills with debris, ices up in the winter, etc. I'd have much rather seen one way snaps at those locations. One of my complaints about the ESEE molle back for the 3 and 4 as well. I was glad to see the 5/6 molle backs have the snap.

I do like the kit, but I won't buy one until they offer a plain blade version. Serrations are the worst thing that ever happened to the knife indrustry. I can see why they put them on dollar store knives that cost $2.00 but they have no place on a real knife.

I watched the vid with the sound off (at work) and just watching him POINT to the features annoyed me. He may have decent survival skills but he has no idea what a good knife is IMO. Watching his shows he demonstrates that he's not a knife guy. The retention system doesn't look all that wonderful to me either. I don't care for the strap at the top of the handle. They always bugged me. I'll stick with my Koyote sheath and a firesteel in my pocket.
