I work in a cigar shop and a customer came in looking for it. I'd never heard of it and just googled it.

Ghurka cigars are hit and miss. My regular cigar is a Ghurka, but they've got some weird and overpriced stuff.

The knife, on the other hand, looks like an Extrema Ratio counterfeit. I'm assuming counterfeit based on price, because I've shopped for that knife before and know it to be a $200+ knife and this whole set is like $150.00.

Odd that a reasonably reputable cigar maker like K. Hansotia would team up with a knife counterfeiter.

But then, I only researched this for about 5 minutes before I wrote this post.

I'm sure you guys'll be all over this.:D

.

Wait......Ghurka cigars? OK, once I get past that I need to grasp the idea that these Ghurka cigars come with a Western knife and not a Khukuri? Huh?

Yup. If you're gonna counterfeit, counterfeit appropriately. :D
Either those are 50 cent cigars or that's a 50 dollar knife. Mall ninja smokes, what a concept!

Hey, fulloflead, it's good to run into you again!

Well, the Ghurkas I smoke (the Symphony) are about $4.50 each when I buy them in a 6-pack, but Ghurka is a botique maker that makes a million different varieties in small runs and they can run from that price up to about $10-$12 smokes. They're also known for some extremely expensive smokes. I heard that the last episode of a series called (oh, I forget) where someone was smoking a $400.00 Ghurka before she dies.

Anyway, they're not like Romeo Y. Jolieta or Hoyo where they make millions of the same cigar and dealers can buy them by the boxcar load. They're a short-run company, mostly. They probably found some tobaccos that made a pretty good cigar, but couldn't make a bunch of them, so decided to make them "special" by doing this co-op.

There's a lot of strange marketing gimmicky stuff that goes on in the cigar world since there are SO MANY competing brands and there are so many good cigars that companies need to find ways to stand out and get noticed.

It doesn't mean it's a BAD cigar; they probably just couldn't make ENOUGH of them based on what they had, so they needed something ELSE to bring attention to it.

Working in the industry, I know the set probably costs about $50-90 wholesale, depending on who's doing the buying...

I extrapolate that you're getting about a $6.00 cigar, a $20.00 knife and $10.00 worth of marketing and packaging.

Hey, fulloflead, it's good to run into you again!

Thanks. Good to see you too. I've been off the radar, trying to make a new life in Washington, DC.

Don't know why cigar smokers would even consider "humidors" made with foam. Nice place to breed mold & mildew while sucking the moisture right out of the cigar.

Non sequitur? What are you talking about?

in your link - "indestructible, waterproof, all weather 30 count travel humidor with humidifier" it has eggcrate foam in the lid and the cigars are in a foam layer, plus another for the knife.

OK. I see. I'm sorry.

Yeah, a lot of travel humidors have foam. For example, there's the Xikar and the excellent Cigar Mechanic ones. The foam is mostly to protect cigars from the TSA during airplane travel and you can take it out if you're not traveling.

But, yeah, if you're not careful, and if you get mold, the foam will keep it forever.

But, if you're careful and don't allow mold, the foam shouldn't make a lick of difference.

I just stumbled upon this thread as I saw a "k. hansotia" knife on ebay 2 days ago and was intrigued by it's ER appearance. I also like cigars, so after some googling I found what the deal was about. I'm still intrigued by the knife -who makes it, steel, anybody own one and has used it?

I might go for the deal anyway. A good looking humidor, cigars with a rep and a mystery knife, doesn't sound too bad to me :D

Hansotia is not a "reputable" maker in the least bit. He's a bigger laugh than Rocky Patel IMO... I've smoked a handful of the SpecOps cigars, and they are no different than any other Gurks. As for the foam in the herf-a-dor (which is really what it is), I've stored cigars in my 20ct. XiKar herfador for well over a week before, with a Boveda system, and never had problems. The use of foam in these pelican style cigar cases is well established practice. If you can properly humidify cigars in a cedar humi, you should never have problems with a foam filled herfador.

Now, more on "board" topic, I can't say I'm at all surprised that a Gurkha package comes with a copy of a legitimate knife. Nothing about this package is worth the price. Avoid it like the plague.

MMMM i had a corona last night that tasted like chocolate or coffee. It was really good paired with a pint of Devine 12.

I would like to try the cigar first, will look for it at the local shop. If it's good, then getting 20 and a humi for that price is not that bad. The knife could get lots of throwing practice :D
