Anyone know of a good band to replace the stock, metal, 18mm, Seiko 5 one? Metal, nylon, rubber, whatever; any idea is good.

Metal, nylon, rubber, whatever -- what are you asking for, a complete list of all the 18mm bands available? There must be a couple of hundred at least, and they all hold the watch on your wrist. How can we guess what you'd like?

Most of the watch wnuts on the net seem to dislike the Seiko bracelet and replace it with either a strap or an aftermarket bracelet -- you can get a better bracelet that's less apt to pull the hairs off your wrist. If you like bracelets ... but some people prefer a strap....

In hot weather a leather strap tends to get smelly and might give you a rash if you have sensitive skin. Nylon can be just as bad unless you keep washing it. If you use a one-piece nylon strap that you slide the watch on it's easy to change them and you can machine-wash them. Or you can wear a rubber strap or a bracelet. FWIW I like a rubber strap, but occasionally I change to a bracelet for variety.

There are a lot of options out there, from the cheap straps and bracelets at Walmart to some that cost more than your Seiko did. IMHO cheap straps are fine but cheap bracelets are not. If you're interested in the high-end stuff take a look at www.timezone.com -- it's the Bladeforums for watch wnuts.
