Seiko diver question

I've been lurking the knife forum and the gagets and gear forum for a while now. Thank you all for the great information over the past year.

I am looking for a new watch. My most current most worn is a mid line Tag (anniversary gift), and I would like something that I can wear on a daily basis that I don't need to worry about banging up. I would like to keep it around $200.00, and I see that the Seiko divers have a great reputation. Here is the question: I am stuck between the "black monster" and the 007. I am thinking automatic (since the Tag is quartz). Is one "tougher" or better built than the other? The black monster looks kind of large for smaller hands. I appreciate all comments, and thanks in advance.

Hi bpg,

I am an avid Seiko fan. I personally wear the Seiko SKXA33 Divers with the same movement as the two you mentioned, the 7S26 Automatic movement. Both watches are superb and it really boils down to which one looks better for you. They are equally good and equally robust with the same movement.

Here is mine:

If you go with an auto Seiko expect it to gain time very fast. My new Pepsi Diver gains about 2 minutes a week. Actually a good thing for me, but may bother others.

Between the Black Monster and the 007, I'd go for the Black Monster. The black paint on the rotaing bezel of the 007 will get scratched and scuffed over time, killing the paint job. All the black monster needs, for repair of a scratch or scuff, is some high grit wet/dry paper.

Seiko needs to add a sapphire crystal to the Monsters. Thats seriously all thats keeping it from being an absolutely amazing watch at even triple the price.

I'd definitely be willing to pay another 50 bucks (not that I should cost that much) for a factory installed sapphire crystal in my Orange Monster.

I just hate EDCing watches that are likely to get scratched (and can't be buffed out like my acrylic watches).

You are in luck as Bill Yao is offering sapphire crystals for the monsters.

Wow, that must be new then...

I'll definitely check him out.

He has just recently started taking orders. I don't know if he has them listed on his website yet. Shoot him an email.

It's been over 12-months now and I'm prepared to declare it. My search for the perfect watch had ended. I've had an Omega SMP (now a drawer queen), a multitude of G-shocks, a Timex Ironman and others.

My fav is a Seiko Diver SKX 171K (it's kind of the Pre-monster). Don't worry about the gain/loss in time - they can be regulated to be very accurate.

Good man!!! That happens to be my favorite watch also. Not as bulky as the Black monster, and still works great with a Rhino strap.

Wow! Thanks for all of the replies so far. It looks like I might be leaning toward the 007. It just looks like it might be a little more versatile as far as looks are concerned. The monster looks awesome but the 007 looks a little more streamlined.

Peter, have you noticed any problems with the bezel paint on your 007?

:D I'm glad I don't live in upstate NY Buzzbait because the next time you commit a felony it would be pinned on me for sure;

'He was a swarthy fellow officer, wearing a Seiko Divers with a silver bezel on a Rhino strap and carrying a spyderco Military"
