I just got one of the G-10 D-2 large Encounters and I couldn't be more impressed. This is one of the finest production knives I have ever seen. The action is as smooth as oiled glass but the blade has no play in anydirection when open. The blade is perfectly centered when closed. There are no flaws that I can see. It comes with the lowest ride pocket clip I have ever had on a knife which makes the knife sit very deep in the pocket.

I really can't understand why this knife doesn't have more of a following. It is one of the best made knives I have ever seen for the money. They cost about $100-120 delivered. You can find them at several places online. They come in small and large. I know there are at least three choices of handles: G-10, Micarta and aluminun. I think there may be other choices but these are the three I have seen. I also think there may be a SS blade option but I am not sure.

It reminds me of an Al Mar knife in a lot of ways. I have a Al Mar Shrike which is very close in build. The Shrike is another one that is built well and priced right but has flown under the radar.

If you can check out either the Shrike from Al Mar or the Encounter form SEKI-CUT in person, I think you will see what I am talking about.

As many know, I am a huge Spyderco fan, but to be honest for about $100, the Shrike and Encounter put most Spydercos to shame. There are a few models from Spyderco that hold their own but none that are better.

Thanks for the info on the Lum.

I'd love to have one of those, but no one seems to have any stock
other than A.G. Russell...and I don't feel like paying his price,
in this instance.

Not a big fan of aluminum scales, so it's good to know it's
available in G10 also.

Kriggs,
I have a few questions if you don't mind.I've been eyeing these,I like the styling.
Is the G-10 Polished,or textured?
What are the sizes of both models?
Where did you get yours from?
Thanks for the info..

Thanks for the review. Did not know it was made with G-10 as well. Isn't Seki-cut the same company that has produced knives for Al-Mar and Spyderco? They make good stuff.

Actually, I think that was Moki. They also make good stuff. :)

No they are not. You are thinking of G. Sekai who made the Japanese Gerber knives.

Al Mars and some Spydercos are made in Seki, Japan, and that's probably where you got confused.

I thought that Moki of Seki, Japan made some of the Al Mar knives,
and also the Beretta Busfield knives. (Which are almost identical to
the Al Mar micarta lightweights, in AUS 8.)

Seki Cut, Moki, and G. Sekai are 3 different companies all operating
out of Seki, Japan AFAIK.

Hi Guys,

Seki-Cut is a consortium of Seki-City knifemakers created several years ago . Each maker makes a specific model for the "Seki-Cut" brand. All are excellent knife-makers that have been making OEM knives for many producers world wide. Some of the designs are custom designs from makers like Bob Lum.

I know some of the makers in the group; G.Sakai, Seto Cutlery, Tak Fukuta Cutlery, Hoa Cutlery. I believe there are several others, 8 as I remember. All quality makers with many hundreds of years of experience between them.

They do a very good job on the Seki-Cut brand because it is representative of their Knife industry in Seki-City. A tradition in Seki-City that goes back 1,000+ years. (The Seki-City area in the Gifu mountains is where the ancient sword makers gathered about 1,000 A.D. They've been making blades ever since.)

Jemmy Iwahara promoted the brand at knife shows and to distributors when they first were introduced.

I have some of the pieces, all excellent.

I know that Moteng carried the line for a while.

Sekai made knives for Al Mar himself but no longer makes them for the company. Moki does. Both gbreat companies

I bought one of these a few months ago from Japanese Knife Direct. I just went back to their web site, and it looks like they're having some sort of Christmas sale. It looks like you could get the G10 version for under $100 delivered...

Wuss,Thanx for the tip,I got a Linen Micarta version.....

That is where I have seen the best prices in the past. I got mine in trade from a fellow forum member. I was going to buy one because I checked one out in a store and I was impressed enough to almost pay the insane mall store 200% mark-up but cooler heads prevailed and I decided to look on the web. Like I thought they were about half what the mall was asking. I lucked into a trade but I would have ZERO problem paying full price for one of these. I have seen them from $100-150 and even if I paid $150, I would consider it a good deal. They are that nice.

I have had a few Al Mar knives. I have a Shrike and a Nomad right now but I have had the Sere 2000 and the Quicksilver as well. This Encounter is the equal of any Al Mar I have seen in every way. There is no quality difference between the Encounter and the Shrike. Both are excellent well made and vastly underrated knives.

VCM3:
The G-10 fine checkered like on the Al Mar Sere 2000 or Spyderco Manix.

I have the larger version and it is about 9 1/4" overall, 5 1/4" close with a 4" blade. That is not exact but it gives you an idea. It is about the same size and weight of the Al Mar Shrike. There is a smaller version as well which I have not seen in person.

Here is a link to some:

They are having a sale it looks like. That makes it an even better deal. I really like the large Micarta but the G-10 is great too. I was happy with either but if I had a choice, I think I would pick the large Micarta over anything else. I haven't tried the smaller version so that might be a nice option if you don't need a large knife but the large Encounter feels so good in the hand that it is hard to get past it.

:) Kriggs,
After Wuss replied to this thread,I went over to Jap knife direct, and got the linen Micarta one.I guess it is the larger one,the spec's say 9-1/8" open,4-1/4" closed. But I think the 4-1/4" is the blade size.It also says bead blasted micarta.I would much rather have the smaller model, and smooth micarta, but for $96 and change,I guess it'll do,especially since you say it is so nicely done.I'll add to the review here, after I get it,Thanks,
Vince

VCM3,
I can't wait to hear what you have to say. I know mine is about perfect. They did have the small Micarta I thought so if you wanted that one, I think you could have ordered it. I hope you like it or you will blaim it on me. LOL!

Seriously, it is a very well knife that I think deserves a little attention. Same can be said for the Al Mar Shrike. If you don't mind a little extra weight and thickness, they make great knives that have lots of class. They are not thick and heavy compared to some knives but there is a little extra to them. They have dual SS liners so you know the weight is going toward making the knife stronger at least.

One of the big things about this knife that people should like is the VERY low ride pocket clip. It almost dissapears in the pocket.

Low ride pocket clip
D-2 steel
Bob Lum design
G-10
dual SS liners
What is not to like?

Kriggs,I did not see the smaller model there?
I would have ordered that one,if I saw it.This knife order is a daring move for me.Usually, this size is too big,but I wanted to check it out.
Vince
I see now, they have a small one in Alum.,not for me.They carry the micarta in the small size, but they are out of stock.I'll check out this larger one,if I like it,I'll keep on it,til I get me a small one.

The big one came in today.I gotta be honest,The other day,I knew I messed up and ordered the wrong size,so I hunted down a place for the smaller one, ordered that, too.

But back to the larger one, mine is micarta.I need to look it over more,I'll get back to you on it,but holy.....
From what I can see so far,it's like a custom.Everything Kriggs raved about, and then some.
I'll be back......
Vince
I'm back,this knife is too much!Man,smoooth.
Feels good in the hand/cumfy
Feels good in the pocket,You don't know she's there as big as it is,thin, too,I like that
Tip down NICE clip
Lockup perfect
Blade centered perfect
Finish and grind of blade,perfect
Texture of blasted handle - suttle, perfect
I also would like to say,if you look at the handle design, your four fingers fit inside the curves, not cramped,Makes me woder, will the smaller version feel as good?
Did I mention this knife was perfect?
