Can anyone tell me anything about this? It is on all of my SOG knives. I have heard that it means that it is japanese surgical steel, any truth to this? Thanks.

Seki Japan is where a lot of the steel, blade, and knife manufacturing takes place.
Think of it as Pittsburgh!

I believe some of Spyderco's overseas made knives originate from there too.

The old Emerson knife site had pics of Ernest Emerson forging steel there.

Junglee also makes some knives there too.

Solingen, Germany, would be a better analogy than Pittsburgh, PA.

Al Mar also had his first production runs from there.

They have the skills, workshops and specialised steels.

Shefield would be the UK's equivalent.

Seki was long the sword-making center of Japan since probably before the 1st millennium.

Some of the well-known knife companies that are manufactured there, or contract to manufacture part of their knife lines there include:
Al Mar,
Spyderco,
SOG,
Cold Steel,
Kershaw,
Lakota,
Browning,
Beretta
Moki,
Sakai,
CRKT (their "Classic KISS" model),
Junglee
And previously, Gerber had a manufacturing facility there that made knives until the mid-90's, I think.

Ken Warner's new line of fixed blade knives sold under the name "Big Country" and sold through Knifeware are made in Seki. Just saw these today at Charlotte.

I believe that the Fallkniven line are also made in Seki. The steel, VG-10 (from Swedish ore, reputedly) is also made in Japan.

Hi SOGman. About 800 AD, the swordmakers of Japan began migrating to the Gifu moutains. There were rivers (Nagaragawa & Kisogawa), breezes, mild climate and high iron content in the soil.

The area eventually became Seki-City Which has specialized in cutlery for a thousand years. There are many knifemakers in Seki that subcontract work from factories (such as those mentioned by James Y). Some of them are very good and could easily rank among the best in the world.

They have developed, in Seki, a very intricate system of subcontractors (cottage industry at its best) that specialize in particular areas (grinding, polishing, holes, etc.) and have become very good at what they do.

Hope this helps.

No one has mentioned, although it may already be surmised, that the Seki-Japan marking specifies its origin but has nothing to do with the steel type.

I believe it is marked on many of SOG's blades which are Made in Japan regardless of 440a, 440c, ATS-34...

I have found the workmanship to be outstanding on knives made in Seki-Japan. The sharpening is also beyond reproach.
