select tool master sharpener

Basically a rule of thumb is never trust any pull-through sharpener to not damage your blade.

That thing is complete and utter garbage. It's assembled poorly, cheap feeling, and does not produce results worth a darn. How do I know? I own one. I think it's in a box somewhere. 12 years ago or so I watched a very convincing demo given by a professional pitch man at a gun show. I was naive enough to believe it and bought one for something like $10.

It was a waste of money for sure. If you're really skilled, you can probably use this thing to get decent results. But really, it's not even a very good example of that type of sharpener. Most of them aren't very good and that one is just a poor example of a bad class of junky sharpeners that beat up blades and usually do more damage than good.

Please look elsewhere for a decent sharpening system (if you need a system) or sharpening stone or stones.

Brian.

I will agree for the most part, except for the Pull Through sharpener I both designed and build. The Edge Renewal Utility knife sharpener. I believe along with many others, that it is the best tool to remove a wire edge or burr, as well as creating what I call a faceted edge.
I hope over time and through education, to lesson the number of people who post as you did, check out my invention. edgeru.com

I have purchased a work sharp field sharpener. I used it on a couple of really cheap knives I found around. I am getting better, but just wondered if there was something that I could use that my lack of skill will not damage even a mid priced knife (that can still be a hurtful waste for some of us)?

The $25 Lansky TB 2D2C 4-rod Turn Box with Diamond and Ceramic rods would be a much better choice and much easier to use, especially for the novice.

Cheapo carbide pull-thru sharpeners are for edges you don't care about, like gas station knives, garden shears, lawn mower blades, and machetes.
