Selecting a knife for my father

I recently discovered that my father did not have a decent pocket knife. After talking with him about what he might like by way of a replacement I started looking.

Here's what I wanted:
  • 3" or less blade
  • slim profile
  • one-handed opening and closing
  • clip
  • fully left-handed or ambidextrous
  • attractive in a quiet way
  • $150 or less

It turned out to be a more difficult quest than I had expected. After looking at just about every knife currently in production, and a few that aren't, I finally settled on...a left-handed Spyderco Delica in Carbon Fiber. :)

He's had the knife for about a week now and is very pleased with it.

The CF Delica is an excellent choice. I was going to suggest the stainless Delica, and have his name engraved on it, but since you already made your choice, I'm sure he'll be pleased with it for many years to come.:).

The Native would have been a good one too.I have a CF Delica and love it,just afraid to carry it at least until I get a back up for it.

I appreciate the comments. Here's why I didn't go with either of those...

I wanted a premium blade steel, which is why I didn't go with the stainless Delica.

The Native is one of my favorite designs, but my father wanted something slim, both in thickness and width, and the Native is quite wide.

As I was reading your post with your requirements for a knife for your father, my hand instinctively reached for my CF Delica. I thought, "This knife matches his requirements perfectly!" So I was pleased to see you thought so also.

It's a very thin yet substantial knife. I can't say I was thrilled with the appearance of the glossy carbon fiber. That's why I put a matte finish on it and it looks GREAT!!

I hope your dad enjoys his new spydie.
