How To Selectively dye handle scales?

i recently obtained a new knife, but it's a bit drab. I want to dye the G10 scales red, but I want to leave the ends black so it's discreet in-pocket.
My question mainly is: is there something I can put over the ends so I won't dye them entirely and get a nice stripe?

Hot glue will block some of the surface dye from getting in, but the edges will be a bit "fuzzy" without a clear border. The problem I see here is that G10 will only dye to a darker shade, so if you are starting out with black scales red dye will not show up. You would need to start with a red handle and dye the ends black.

If your using rit dye it might bleed into the edges even if covered. Ive dyed scales from tan to blue and grey to blue worked great, but black to any other color I cannot see it working.

A little off topic but a possible option.
Before all this surface mount tech came about in electronic devices when you could do repairs & replace
parts on a circuit board clear nail polish on the board would keep solder from flowing where you did not
want it. If it could stand up to hot solder it may keep the dye from migrating.

Going black to red, you might be better off either ordering custom scales or just getting a really durable paint for the scales.
