SELF DEFENSE WITH KNIFE

Wiz, welcome to Blade Forums.
Be advised, there are more Forums than this one, and you're better off posting Knife related questions somewhere else.
This forum is for "off topic" posts, which basically means anything that does NOT have to do with knives.

Try the self defense forum, or the general forum... you'll get better results.

Thanks,
VG

Try this link for videos, books and a host of other information:

Also check out books by Michael Janich. You can get those from Amazon.com.

There are many others including people who are active here at BFC but the two mentioned are the ones I'm most familiar with and the books that I own are from them.

Check the other Forums here under 'Tactics And Training' for more information.

Best of luck and Welcome!

Great answer Razoredj, quite a complete list.
Wiz, if you also want to spend time on training and not only reading, begin with Hock´s and Mike Janich´s books, as Emanym Tom said. Consider the others as interesting, sometimes amusing or obscure supplements.

Very nice list - one name is missing though: Master at arms Bram Frank.

He has a set of tapes on general edged weapons - the leading edge, and also an amazing three video set on the new Gunting.

You can get most of them here:

http://www.videos4selfdefense.com/cssd.htm

The best thing to do however, is learn from a teacher - get yourself a good one and practice.

No slight against Bram was intended; the list contains only books, as books were specified by the original poster.

I haven't yet read Hochheim's book(s), so can't speak to it. I do own both the Janich and Richard Ryan books. I heartily recommend the latter over the former.

Ryan deals with the basics very well, and presents everything in the context that an opponent may well be more skilled than you. He provides a realistic stance, and primarily deals with tactics and strategies, potentially applicable no matter what the circumstances. He trains your head, and give you some mental/attitudinall, as well as physical skills which could keep you alive.

I think there was good reason that Gunsite had Ryan design their basic blade courses.

My $.02 worth.

Knife Fighting: A Practical Course, by Michael Janich, is my recommendation. I haven't read much else on the subject, but I bought this book and when reading it, I thought the following:

"Hey, that footwork is like the filipino stuff I did with my JKD buddies.... Hey, those angles are the angles I trained with my stick work.... hey, the kicks and pokes and such Janich recommends I have traiend with my JKD buddies... hey... AND SO ON!"

The training is no-nonsense, simple, and fits well with Filipino stuff you'll see elsewhere, and likely similar to what you'll see from a JKD instructor. Good stuff for sure!

Byt he way, ditto ont he vote for that nice list made! I'll have to check out soem of those books myself!
