I wanted a lightish hatchet , but nothing was available in the local shops.
So what does one do ?--------well you make it of course.
This started off as a full sized cheap Chinese Axe , fortunately this axe was made of fair steel with an acceptable standard of heat treatment , hard where it needs to be hard , softer elsewhere.
This conversion was done using hand tools only , the only machine tool used was a drill-press used to drill the cross-pin hole.
I did not set out to follow any acceptable pattern , I just hacksawed and filed untill it appeard done 😄.
The completed hatchet complete with handle weighs about 600 grams , (ie about 1 1/2 pounds).
Well---it kept me occupied for a while ;).

I also favor a light hatchet, perhaps a little lighter than yours, and like you I modify them in tomahawk ways.

Working in the trades, I carry one almost every day, and most of mine fall into the “hammer hatchet” category - lath, shingle and drywall or some variation of those. I use a rigging hatchet almost exclusively for framing.

You really can't find a 1-1/4lb hatchet available at the hardware store in your country ?
That's really a shame.
Yeah , hard to believe , but I live in a Failed State , EVERYTHING has collapsed , heck we don't even have a properly functioning Post Office anymore.

I'm very interested in knowing what country if you would be willing to share.
Because I enjoy participating in the forum activities , I think that it is best if we do not discuss this subject.
The World has done a really excellent one-sided "Hatchet Job" on us , no , we are on our own , and will have to try and get over this (if it is possible).
