Self Reliance Illustrated magazine is shutting down. :(

This was a pretty cool magazine that featured our own Mistwalker more then a few times, including an article on Fiddleback Forge in issue 20.

They've put together a package where you can download all the back issues for $3.99. Not $3.99 an issue, $3.99 for all the issues. The ones I have are all great and I'm grabbing this deal.

I won't link it since I'm not sure that'd fly, but I'm guessing you can find it.

It is sad, the days of print media are fading fast. People would rather spend their time figuring out what's what on you tube than to spend their money on actual magazines it seems. That is definitely a great deal, I'll be taking advantage of it myself, as well as I ordered some back issues of hard copies. My Fiddlebacks were shown in a couple of my articles in that magazine. Mu Hunter served me very well in that extensive bow drill article back in issue number 9. I hate to see the magazine go, I really do.

I just read that email. Great deal on the digital content.

It is a shame SRI will be no more. I am not familiar with the circumstances of the decision, but I can only suspect that even a 100% e-subscription model in this day in age would be a financial burden for such a small niche market.

I haven't heard of the magazine, but undertand the plight.

When I first got a job working in northern Alberta, I would frequent the news stand for the newest issues of Field and Stream, Guns and Ammo, Alberta Outdoorsman, Hunting Illustrated, and the National Geographic specials to name a few, to pass the downtime spent in my work truck. Back then I had a not-so-smart phone that I had owned for over 4 and a half years.

Ever since I purchased an Itelephone, I have not made my way back to the news stand. I realize the convenience of instant information is partially, if not wholly, to blame for the folly of traditional information sources.

I still love going back and opening up some of those old magazines to look for an article that had almost escaped my memory, if only to reminisce.

Thanks for the heads up on the firesale; It's definitely a topic I'm interested in.

For anyone looking for the package, take a look at the Self Reliance Outfitter's store.

I just realized this is Dave's company, is it not? I bought a Pathfinder School SS Nalgene style water bottle from him ages ago. Small world. All the more reason to support him.

Survival Quarterly is another magazine in the same vein, that may survive a while longer. Their overhead is lower since those of us who write for them do so pro bono out of love and respect for Ron and Karen, and the desire to pass on the knowledge to the younger crowd.

Many magazines in this subject area struggle to remain in print, and several publishers are regrouping and trying different approaches to it. But much of the advertising money is being pulled from this area and being put into videos on You Tube where more people are spending their time. Personally, I'd love to find the right people to train and put in front of a video camera to pass on knowledge, but I still think that people will regret the loss of so much print media one day.
