S30V, 440C, or D2, stainless Hornets nest, and ladder pattern Mike norris Damascus.

These are my choices... GO!

Just the steel has no meaning without specifying the designed use for the knife.

Also, what is the "stainless hornets nest"?

oops, I ment to include that is is for a small folder.

the hornets nest and ladder are but Mike Norris Damascus, but I am leaniung towards non-damascus.

You still haven't fully answered the question.

Where do you intend to carry/use this knife? ie Will it get chucked in a toolbox or will it be worn with a 3-piece?
What will you be cutting with it?
How much corrosion resistance do you need?
How important is ease of sharpening?
Who besides you will use this knife?

sorry, guess there is a bit more to the question than I thought.

it will be a utility piece, but with some artistic flair...not just a plain jane kinda knife.

it will be carried at work, mostly opening boxes and stuff, no real heavy duty use. Won't be a safe queen, but won't be a hard use knife either.

Not sure I need much corrosion resistance, but I want it to last and look nice.

I use a spidie sharpmaker, I kinda suck with stones and stuff so I keep it simple. I can get a blade plenty sharp enough with the sharpmaker for what I use them for.

Um...nobody uses my knives besides me...

I can't help you.
Heck, I can't even decide whether I like 1095 or 440C better in a pocket knife.

Ya know, knarfeng, that's a heck of a thing. I don't think I ever thought of it before, but I think I'd like 1095 just for the patina (to make it look old and funky), but 440C for ease of maintenance. That means that, like you, I'd have a heck of a time deciding.

You may have been kidding, but I'm not.

Actually, I was serious.

Will Rogers said, "I've never met a man I didn't like."

As for me, I never met a steel I didn't like. They all have their positives and negatives.

I like carbon steel because I can get such a fine edge on it with so little effort.
I like 440C cause the edge that it does get lasts longer.

My opinion is just about worthless (no knowledge base), but I love my CPM-M4.
I can get it freakishly sharp without much effort and so far it's impressed me with how long it stays freakishly sharp while doing some fairly demanding chores.
I have yet to see any rusting (I work on the waterfront) though I do wipe the blade once in a while.
It seems to hold an edge better/longer than my S30V, maybe I'm delusional.

my 2 cents

Edit: Sorry, didn't stick to the question. Don't know anything about the other two but S30V seems to be a great steel.

With those choices I would go with D2, and that would depend on the heat treatment etc.

It does, you aren't delusional.

i was going to suggest vg10, but it's not in your list so ill go with s30v. holds an edge like a bear, stain and rust resistent, not the easiest to sharpen, but with diamond it isnt that hard either.
