I'm leaning towards the BK9, but I'd like to fill any gaps in my collection. Now, bear in mind, I'm not that interested yet in collecting Beckers for the sake of having Beckers. I'll fill you in on what I have so far as far as large fixed blades. Please let me know what you think I'm missing out on:

Small knives:

BK11, Bark River Bravo Necker 2, Kershaw Amphibian, Cold Steel Counter Tac II, CRKT Sting.

Mid-size knives:

Swamp Rat RatManDu, BK2, Bark River Aurora

Fighters:

Benchmade Nimravus, Buck Nighthawk, Ka-Bar USMC, Cold Steel Peace Keeper 1, Cold Steel Kobun, Dawson Scorpion

Large choppers:

A bunch of HI khukuri, several Kabar Kukri Machete

I'm not too likely to want a big chopper because I love my HI khuks, particularly the 18" Ultimate Fighter. I'm pretty happy with the BRKT Bravo Necker and the BK11 for a small EDC blade. And I've got the BK2 and RMD to cover my mid-size knife needs. And I think I'm reasonably well covered on all ends for fighters.

What am I missing here? Suggest a Becker that I need to add to my collection :D

Bk5. Didn't see any grill knives. that's what I use mine for. The kitchen and the grill.

Chops up peppers and onions and meat and potatoes and everything else you can stick over a grill. My bk5 is my go to kitchen knife anymore. Nice up sweep blade for rolling it on a cutting board and a great slicer.

Agreed. The BK5 sounds like something that you don't have anything like yet. Also, the BK7 is also really useful (don't have one, it just looks that way :P), and is kind of that "in between" size between the BK2 sized knives and the larger choppers.

BK7.......I love mine.... great size for a lot of chores... lighter and easier to handle than my BK 2......working on getting the BK 9 next..... wanna get one in my hand.... need to feel the difference between 7 and 9.

What I meant by the grilling comment is that it seems like I could use any knife for a grill knife, although I'll probably not use the Dawson or something like that. Is there a specific spec to the BK5 that makes it somehow more suitable than any of my other knives? If I'm at home, I usually cook with my set of actual kitchen knives, which are pretty good quality, and if I'm in the woods, the Aurora has always done well by me. I don't like carrying more than 4-5 knives, after all, and even then it's kinda overkill. Next time I go out, I'll have the BK11, RMD, maybe the BK2, although it's a bit heavy for my tastes, Aurora, and probably the 18" UF. And my EDC folder, of course.

I forgot about the tweeners though. I actually like the looks of some of those. I'll think about the BK5; better choice than the BK9?

Well, you already have large choppers (LARGE), so the 9 might not be as different or useful as the 5 might be. The five has its nice choil, and a totally different blade shape (trailing point), but it is by no means limited to the kitchen, or grill.

To me, the reason its a grill knife, is because I simply wouldn't take my kitchen knives to the grill (not the nicer ones anyway), but the BK5 would feel right at home there or in the woods. I hear it feels great in the hand as well.

I have the same theory that you do though, I'm not collecting, but buying blades that fill different use cases, and I don't want to purchase more than one for the same style of work, because personally, thats a bit wasteful.

Good luck man

In my opinion there is a gap between the BK2 and the HI Khuk that would be filled nicely by the BK9. I don't have a Khuk( and I want one :)) but the machetes I do have are gathering dust since getting my 9.

Honestly though you could head out into the bush today and never buy another knife and do very well.

You need nothing else but if It was me I would want a 9.

I see your point mauser. I guess I didn't think through the size difference between a USMC (one of his larger knives) and the 18in kuk or a machete.

I guess I was thinking mostly about how the USMC isn't tons smaller than a BK9, so why not go with something different.

To be honest here, its not like there are any bad beckers out there, so I'm sure you'll be happy with whatever you get.

Personally, the BK9 is my next one, because I hear it is sweet ( I also don't own a grill yet :P)

BK9. It's a chopping machine, but I can still make feather sticks with ease. A great all around blade. Also, it just looks bad ass. ;)

Get another Becker, fence-sitter, or I will taunt you a second time.

(I agree, BK5 if you have plenty of woods blades.)

Beckers sell themselves.
You have all the bases covered.
The BK7 and the BK9 are both great knives.

Seems to me that the only reason to have a blade as large as a 9, besides the fact that it looks cool, is for chopping and large cutting tasks. Which means that while I might have a size gap, as it were, the role would STILL be filled by a khukuri. But I'm pretty sure I'm missing something?

I don't have much to bring to this party other than the fact that I've been sold on the idea of picking up a BK-9. Looks to be a solid contender for sheer cussedness.

So yeah, go for a BK-9, and get in line

BK9 is just a freakin awesome chopper. Add a choil & some jimping & it can also do smaller tasks.

IMHO, there is no grill knife thats more manly than a BK5.

Ok, so I think I'm choosing between the 5 and the 9, or waiting for the Tweeners. Thanks for the input everyone.

-edit- Okay, thought of something else to add. I definitely like the looks of the BK9. But Beckers feel so heavy in hand for some reason. Those of you who are martial artists or military, or otherwise competent at the use of combat knives, how does the BK9 move in hand. Is it mainly a chopper, or is it also quick? Because my HI 18" UF is barely heavier, and moves very well in hand, and right now is my go-to big fighting knife, outside of a couple other blades. Plus, it does well at the whole (that's not a knife, THIS is a knife) game.
