I'm thinking about moving. Austin is one of the few places that I have seriously considered, even though I have not been there. Some background; I do not want to live north of the Mason Dixon, and I am looking for something on the outskirts, possibly with enough property for horses. I don't know what the housing (purchase) market is like (really), or the job situation (financial services, college degree, series 7&66), wife works in foster care. It's maybe a little long off, but anything that anybody can offer will be appreciated.

Austin is one of the most progressive towns in TX. Texas in general has affordable home prices.

The mosquito's are big enough to carry you off. :D The state of Texas is another country. Or, that's what Texans are bred to believe. There just seems to be a more independent spirit there.

I'm from Mineral Wells Texas myself.

Great music, great BBQ, bats, freaky-deaky liberals, and hot. I've heard it called the "California of Texas" or something similar. I've been there a couple of times, and would like to go back. My wife has a cousin that lives there, and they seem pretty normal.

I love Austin, and so do most that live here. If you can't stand a good time or have a stick up your rear, there's still a place for you in Austin, but it'll be hard(er) to find. We have good food, great people, a healthy mix of liberals and conservatives, the occasional nude joggers, more than enough bike paths, 3 lakes, lots of open area for those interested, cars still must legally yield to horses, etc. Down town Austin is where the teens, clubs, bars, liberals, naked old people, etc. may be found. East Austin is as close to a ghetto as Austin can have. The rest is just pretty general suburbs. The area on the lake (Travis and Austin in particular) is amazing, but also VERY expensive, and it's not going to go down seeing as the housing part of our economy is still booming. Most everything is also within a 3-4 hour drive from Austin at most.

It's hard not to love Austin.

Edited for flipping cedar trees. I HATE cedar pollen, and it's all over the place at times, but not that bad unless you're deathly allergic to it.

Edited again for the heat. It get's to 106 peak in most summers, generally between 92-100. There's some humidity, but it's not too too bad. It's cold here right now, meaning around 40. Expect little to no snow.

Great city with great people. Austin residents are friendly and very laid back. Great clubs, great music, and great food - some of the best bbq and Tex-Mex food you'll find anywhere in the country...

On the negative side - the city has really grown in the last 10 years and the traffic is getting to be a bit of a whip. Property values have taken a considerable jump, as well.. (still far below anything in California, though)

If it wasn't for my wife I would move to Austin in a NY minute. I absolutely love the place! :D (wife's family living in the D-FW metroplex and you couldn't blast her out of here.)

It's motto is "Keep Austin Weird."

What more do you need?

Traffic sucks, lots of hippies, lots of frat boys and sorority girls, good food, lots of entertainment(check out Esther's Follies), job market is decent, housing is expensive compared to other parts of Texas but pretty good when compared nationally. Nice place to visit but I wouldn't want to live there

Been to Austin many times on business, but last visit was 15 years ago. Back then, I always considered Austin the most progressive city in Texas. The University and Texas politics have a huge impact on the way of life there. And yes, Austin does have a real night life.

I'd echo some of the comments above ... Beware of the mountain cedar pollen there. If you're allergic (or become allergic over a number of years) it will make your life miserable. It doesn't bother the majority of folks, but if you fall into the group of thousands that it does bother, you won't be liking life there.
