I reeeaaaallllly dig the look of this thing, and am in the market for a mid - large (ish) blade for camping duty. I've never owned a Buck, much less a 119, so I ask thee, Buck fans, why should I buy this blade? For comparison, the nearest competitor is the Ka-Bar Dog's Head Utility.

Thanks, all.

Buck knives simply rock - they have good looks, good steel, good sheaths, good folks making them, and good folks standing behind them. Most importantly is the dedicated group of Buck-Nuts who hang around here at this sub-forum and who will talk your ears off about all things Buck! Git yourself one, in whatever handle material trips your trigger - you won't be sorry. OH

A Buck 119 looks like a knife should look!

Buck did a really nice job on this knife. They ventured into new territory and hit a home run as far as I'm concerned. I bought one because it's a BUCK and because if it's a short run, I will have one. The stacked leather with micarta spacers look great and feel good. There are holes in the right places to strap it to a stick. The blade is not to long or to short. I think if your camping duties include delicate food preparation along with more manly tasks, this blade will fit the bill.

Did I sell it?

I do like the Ka-Bar Dog's Head Utility though too. I mean really, there is a skull and bones pirate dog on the blade and on the sheath! That's pretty cool. I'm pretty sure you could beat the heck out of it too. It's next on my list.

Nope. I ain't gonna do it.
You'll like it if you get it.
If you get the ((((shudder)))) CUTCO ((((shudder)))) Ka-Bar ... my condolences.

Though I love the old Korean War era "fighting knives" like the Kabar, I don't see a practical purpose for such a design these days. Nostalgia doesn't count... The 119 is a fine big game knife, but falls short of my woods/camp needs. I retired my 619 in favor of a more suitable woods knife. Something I thought I could chop with, baton with, even dig with was better suited for my pack. It's not often I find myself using it for those purposes, but I have a lot more confidence in something built with a camp/woods purpose than something built for cleaning game.

I can't recommend it for any purpose other than conversation. I like the Buck Compadre or Froe for camp/woods, but ended up with a Tops B.O.B. for my camp knife. 3/16" thick 1095 carbon straight blade with a Scandia grind. So far, I couldn't be happier, other than the spring metal belt clip. I should have gotten the leather dangler sheath.

Doesn't perform any differently that the standard 119 - I guess it just looks more tactical which probably appeals to some here.

Back in the day some famous Green Berets loved the 120 (just a longer 119). They said it was the do all knife and they had zero complaints with their use in real world situations. I think you will be fine with this knife.

I love the 119, easily one of my favorite knives, and I'm a fan of a lot of knives. I love it so much I bought one in carbon steel too! And it turns out, as long as you're reasonable, they really are superb, tough knives. The tang is reassuringly thick and the grind is made to cut; it makes a very good knife. If I could justify buying a Brahma I absolutely would, but I've got my grail 119, and it's made of 5160 :) Go for it!!

I bears asking, what do you do with a knife when you're camping.

The 119 is an iconic hunting knife and the Brahma is a stylized 119 - that is, a really, really cool looking hunting knife. It will be great for cleaning game and general food prep type work. It will handle most basic wood working chores OK.

This is not a knife I would batton and split wood with. I would go with a Buck Punk or Selkirk if that's in your plans. Hope this helps.
