Selling knives to my friends in Texas. Help me choose.

I need information on which of these particular knives, you would sell to a friend. I like the Eye brand knife because of its history with Texas cattle ranchers. I also like Tree brand, Hen & Rooster, and possibly Case. My grandfather owned quite a few cattle back in the '50's, and carried a Case stockman. His father was a cattle drover. I'd like to be as traditional as possible, but I want good, high quality workmanship. Thank you.

If they are friends, why not just gift them the knife?

Everybody knows if you gift a knife to a friend, it'll cut the friendship!

But selling him one for a penny is always an option.

Of those, I would go with a stockman pattern. Case is a sure bet, of course. I don't know much about eye brand though. But a solid case stockman is something with history and will last a lifetime.

Thanks for the comment, but I've got to make a living. I live in a small town where most of my customers will probably be my friends. I just hoped that some of you would have enough knowledge of the particular brands that I stated, that you could steer me towards the purchase of the top knife company, or companies, in this group. Gosh, I wish I could give good knives to all my friends, but I've been out of work for 3 years. And I didn't really want to have to tell you that.

Oh, sorry - I remember you from your other posts now - you have a store, right? Looking for brands to stock?

Of the ones you mentioned, probably everything on the list is fine other than Hen & Rooster.

Case can be tough because of their requirements to be a dealer. GEC is probably hard to get into right now because they have become very popular in the past couple of years and they really can't even keep up with demand from their current customers.

You might want to contact Queen. They also make the Schatt and Morgan brand. They make high-end knives that are reasonably priced. They are reputed to have some QC issues, but when they get it right, they make a good knife.

Oh! I'm sorry then! Didn't realize you where asking for business reasons. I assumed selling from a personal collection.

Stock the Rough Rider, Schrade/Imperial/Old Timer/Uncle Henry and Marbles brands, too.
Not everyone can afford to spend $45 and up for a knife. Rough Rider, Schrade, and Marbles would let them get a good knife for not a lot of money.
The Buck line of knives would also be good to carry.

Of the ones you mentioned I would go with Case because everyone is familiar with the brand. Some Great eastern cutlery knives would be great for somebody looking a little higher end. Queen is a great suggestion on this front as well. And rough rider if you want good (quality) cheap (price) knives that anyone can afford. The others you mentioned are good knives as well but I don't know that they have as wide name recognition as case. And buck.

Of those brands I would choose Case. Great selection, good American quality and a rock solid warranty.

I recently visited a small town on the NSW south coast- an historic picturesque old village long past its heyday now a tourist mecca.
The main business is cheesemaking as it is dairy country.
Then comes the usual array of scented candles and soaps shops with windchimes and all that Special Holistic Imported Tourist stuff.
The leather and saddle shop had these Daniel Boone hats made of foxes
(remembering the red fox is a destructive introduced feral pest in this country)
as I gazed longingly and ran my fingers through the lush soft fur I felt an intense pain as if two high powered laser beams were scorching into the back of my skull.
Like a POW in a goon tower searchlight I froze in fear. Instantly I turned to face my foe,my finger found what they were looking for -the price tag -$225.
"Ahohhoh ffs Sweetie! check out the price of this thing!" I innocently exclaimed with a tone of scorn as if to underline my words with the message that only an idiot would pay that much.
"where on earth would you wear it?" she asked ,her English accent all sweetness and indulgent pity. The reality being she was testing me,like a Polar bear tests the ice above a baby seals hiding place- then in for the kill.
It was too late.I was doomed. My salvation came in the form of a leather viking helmet adorned with a pair of real owl wings which I spied on top of another shelf -I managed to divert her attention to that and then to some belts.
Then i saw the cabinet of knives- mainly Opinel, some hand made fixed blades (most likely imported blades with local timber handles over priced but great looking), Taylor Scrades and in amongst that lot a made in Sheffield stockman. I had to tear my eyes away and make for the door.My sons had abandoned me and my quest.
"That hat is a LOT of money." said SWMBO as we exited
"ridiculous amount of dough " I responded
as the giant paw swept down through the icy crust crushing the baby seals head in one mighty blow.

edit -while she was in the woodturning gallery I asked about the owl wings-road kill been there for years not for sale.

You could also gift a knife from Moore Maker Knives of Matador, TX. Some of their knives are just gorgeous. To my knowledge, they don't make their knives per se, they order SFO's. The one's that Queen builds for them are very nice. Just google Moore Maker Knives. You could keep it an all Texas thing!!

I've always heard the same thing. If you give someone a knife, they should give you a coin.

Why not a small Buck Knife display? Their knives are well built in the USA, but affordable work-a-day knives. I sell building materials to lumberyards and hardware stores - means I get to look at (and buy!) a lot of knives. I currently see Buck and Case as the quality knives offered (used to be plenty of Schrade USA displays too). I see Rough Rider and Taylor-Schrade as their low-cost lines. Only a very few have any Bear & Son (mostly those with a Ace Hardware franchise). Good luck to you. OH
