What laws must I adhere to in order to sell knives online? Am I responsible for selling say a sword cane to an eBay bidder in California even though I am in Tennessee?
Is it the buyer or seller's responsibility to be aware of the laws in the buyers location?~Nathan

Nathan, there is no clear answer here to me. NY and ILL have sued several dealers for selling items via the internet or mail orders to people in their states. Other states have sort criminal charges to sellers, and this has had mixed reactions. The chances are very good that you will never have any trouble as long as you stay away from the most obvious types. I would second think cane swords and lip stick knives, as they are not viewed too well by any law enforcement agency. Most importantly watch what you send via the USPS as UPS is a private company and is not regulated, but the USPS is a Federal agency and if you violate their policy it is a federal offense.....

I'd definitely talk to a knowledgable business attorney if you want to get a better idea of what's OK and what to stay away from.

If you look at catalogs of big knife dealers they've got all kinds of disclaimers and limitations in there, shipping restrictions to certain states for certain items...

you just KNOW that an attorney wrote that stuff
knife dealers don't write like that!!

If in DOUBT...

Check it out!

You don't want to get hung by the Long-arm of the law.
