Selling Knives?

I read that "I recently sold my this or that knife." Do you all actually sell your knives as you would a firearm or is it pretty much a sell to friend kind of thing or you give them away? I have knives that I have no use for or desire to keep. They sit in a box for years and I rarely look at them. From a practical perspective, how do you sell your regular factory knives? I'm not talking about customs?

I look at what I believe the value is and think to myself that it is kind of ridiculous to sell these knives if they have been used. ($20 here and $10 there kind of thing.) I figure they either go to the trash or stay in my box. What do you do?

When I sell a custom knife, I sell a knife on one of the forums I belong to. Or sometimes I will put it up for trade. That is a whole lot of fun! I have met some WONDERFUL people trading knives.

When I was into production knives, I might sell them in batches, or trade them, or give them away. I have had some that were so crappy, I DID toss them in the trash.

If you have a lot of them that you don't use, you can sell them with a Gold or Platinum membership on here, or trade them with your current membership. I have traded and sold a lot of knives away that I didn't use, and a while later, bought the same model back. Even got the same knife a few times. I sell and trade on here and other forums. Sometimes people just have bills to pay, other times they are done with their new toy and ready to move on to something else. I also trade at flea markets, gun shops, gun and knife shows, knife shows etc.

IMHO if they are less than $50 they are not worth all the fuss.

Many here will run a contest, and put a knife up for the prize, or maybe a group a knives. Good fun! :D

They may not be anything to you but, one man's trash is anothers treasure.

All my "crappy" knives have found their way to the trash a long time ago. You don't see people walking around gun or knife shows with a sign on their back "Case Knife for Sale, $20".

I posed this question both for my own information and for those that pick up knives from time to time and eventually feel no need to keep them. I don't view selling a Case or Camillus knife as "raising cash for the rent"; more like buy a couple loaves of bread, but expend so much effort doing the selling that it is not worth the effort. Yes, there is the fun factor. I used to sell and trade quite a few firearms just for the fun of it and perhaps make a few bucks in the process.

If you have a local Boy Scout troop, you can give them to the scoutmaster. He knows who in his troop would appreciate them, and who has the "Whittling Chip" safety approval to have one. Or he can make them a prize for a contest within the troop. Either way, you know that they will be put to good use. And you will feel good about the donation. :)

I've never sold, traded, or given away a knife from my collection no matter how 'crappy'. Nor would I. If I have a 'crappy' knife, it was probably either a gift or one that I found, and to me those knives are the most 'valuable'.

But I do have a small stash of discontinued factory knives that are set aside as potential future trade fodder. They are identical duplicates to knives cataloged in my collection so they won't be missed, and I bought them for the explicit purpose of trading.

If your unwanted knives are mint or NIB, you might consider offering them for trade or as giveaways. If they're used, just give them away to a young person that might not have a pocketknife - nephew, brother, Scout troop, neighbor...

I'm a pack rat as my wife will quickly inform you if asked. All you have to do is walk around my house. The impression is undeniable. My office is the same and I hope to make some improvements there in the near future. So, honestly speaking, I really hate to throw away something that has value and utilitarian use such as a knife even if it is a cheap Frost brand knife. I HAVE GUN AND KNIFE DISEASE.

The suggestion to donate them to a Boy Scout Troop leader is excellent. These days, you have to think twice even giving a knife to a kid because they might carry the dang thing to school to show it off. I did the same thing, but it was legal then or it was more accepted.

I suppose I could walk into a gun show and hand the guy with all the knives spread out on his table a pocketfull and say, get what you can for them, but that is not my nature. I'm cheap and I don't see those guys handing me a knife for free.

I guess I'm just stuck in that place of fighting my nature or doing nothing. Nothing is what I have done for years and I keep buying knives.

Some of my well used knives have been with me for a long time and used when I was a kid. So, I'll keep them and they can bury them with me. They have more value than "dollars".

Well said.

When I croak, I'd like all of my knives melted into a blob and tossed in the ocean. Just so no one else can have them. :p
