The For Sale sections are certainly screeching to a halt, but the Wanted to Buy and For Trade sections are actually doing fine.

I like that whole side of the forums because I'm usually looking to buy knives, not sell. And I usually have something particular in mind, so I'll post my requests. I have a Military on its way to me today, in fact.

So I guess it depends on what you expect from that whole area over there.

We only have a couple of hundred members who have paid for a gold or premium membership. Of those I would think a fairly good percentage did so just to support the forums and have no interest in selling knives. Obviously not enough members who like to sell knives think it is worth paying $30.00 to do so. Maybe that will change over time, I don't know.

Personally I really don't care that much since I don't sell many knives and I use this forum for the information that I get and the contacts that I make. That part of the forums is still going strong and in some ways it is seems to be getting better. It seems to be a bit friendlier place lately.

I don't know about anyone else, but the market crash has annihilated my savings, so I have not been buying hardly anything, knives or otherwise, in the last month or two. Also, as to the level of activity on the FS forums, it does seem to have slowed, but I think part of that is dividing what used to be single forums into multiple separate forums (like individual FS went from one to 5 forums - a real pain to plow through, so I check them less often). So these may be factors, in addition the the abandoning ship of those who ----------------- (inflammatory statement about folks who frequent(ed) & sold on the forums but refuse to pony up to support said forums, deleted).

Well Fishface, I guess I'm one of those--------(expletive deleted) who have not signed up for Gold Membership. I had every intention of doing so but held off in order to see if the forum died or thrived. I agree with the previous post that it is extremely difficult to sell a knife these days without taking a beating on it. That, coupled with the fact that I got stung on two deals lately, has kind of soured me on the whole hobby. I still check the forums occasionally but it's not, for me, the obsession it used to be. I've got three or four knives that are duplicate types that I'm trying to sell and when they're gone I'll probably back off further yet. Just does'nt seem to be the same enthusiastic crowd it was just a few short months ago.

I agree with KWM this place seems to be nicer now. Weird, maybe "some" people got interested in watches, pens or something else to make money. Who knows. I only know one thing: It´s nice to be here.

Have a nice weekend everyone :)

(Soon I´m going to the postoffice to pick up my brand new L-UDT :) )

I have no intention of ever selling. I have one knife I have tried to trade and it seems that I am an idiot and my only chance is to be a BUYER, a COLLECTOR. But, I am still a basic member. NOPE, I will be sending my money BECAUSE these boards are my SALVATION, my place where I get EDUCATED, learn, learn, learn This is where I have met some of the FINEST people in the world. Oh you bet I am gonna pay. Not to be a seller, not to wheel and deal, simply to insure that BF is HERE FOREVER so my Son's and I can one day be the name on the left with 5,000 posts and PEOPLE E-mail ME for ADVICE. I am sending my check as a donation to help with the expenses of running BF, NOTHING ELSE.....wolf;)

I signed up mostly because I said I would. I posted on that monster thread, you know which one I'm referring to, that I would pay in support of the forum. There are other places to sell, but this is where it all began for me. This is where I learned most of what I know about knives and I've met alot of great people along the way. So the choice was easy for me.

What really disappoints me is that there were so many other people who were so quick to say they would support BF by buying membership, but have yet to put there money where their mouth was. If you beleive it, and say your going to do it, then you should... IMHO. If everyone agrees to do something, but instead of doing it waits around to see what's going to happen, then guess what... nothing's going to happen.

Anyways, maybe the change is for the better. I have been spending more time in alot of other forums these days.

Eric.

Mr. redratsnake,

You are, as usual, a ray of sunshine. Your pleasant, positive contribution is a welcome contrast to the gloom-and-doom attitude that a small but vocal handful of sour members have lately adopted. I'm so glad that we have you here to cheer our days.

The new membership structure is only a few weeks old, very much in the development stage. Some have not yet had an opportunity to sign up. A lesser man than you might rush to judgement. But you, in your wisdom, have decided to withhold any harsh judgement until the experiment has had a generous time.

While other, less thoughtful persons than yourself might interpret a slowing of collectible knife sales as possibly being caused by only one factor, you see and share with us the "big picture". You realize that summer is typically a slow season here on bf.c and for knife sales in general. And you gently remind us that we are unfortunately in a time of economic slowdown when many folks have scaled back discretionary spending.

Yes, Mr. redratsnake, I'm glad we have you here to help us maintain a positive, constructive discourse and attitude.

Nice quote redratsnake. Did you know that Maynard is into knives? It's true... I know a guy that owns an outdoorstore, and he is always coming in to buy knives. Spydercos, Benchmades, etc. Just an FYI...

I did not know that he is one guy i would like to meet i bet he is very interesting to talk to hope the tour comes this way it has been a long time since they have been around here thanks for the info now i won't be able to rest untill i find out what knives he likes best

 Tim

[chuckling at Chuck]

Damn, the last time I saw Maynard, I had to take him home and he puked all over by back seat... too many G&Ts...maybe not the same person? Sounds like his lyrics though...:)

the selling forums may be slow here but the whole cutlery industry is hurting right now....people do not have as much spare cash to play with due to the economy and the down market.....the last few shows in memphis were full of cutlery dealers singing the blues of low sales....my local dealers and brick and mortar shops are also hurting....seems like the bigger shows like the blader show and the florida custom show, etc do ok since the big name guys are there to sell otherwise hard to find items but from the people i have talked to who have attended these shows it seems that the hard core knife nuts are the only one's buying

i think until the economy heats up a bit sales/buys will be slow and when more people are able to afford or decide to afford the fee here on the forums to sell their goods the action will be slow....i mainly buy here but have sold and traded my share of knives on the forums...i became a gold member to help finance my addiction for learning off of these forums

just my two cents worth

Thanks Doc

I will go with that it's kinda like the bizz i am in you only cut grass in the summer and plow in the winter so don't think some one will buy your mower in the middle of a snow storm ???

Tim

The wanted to buy and the trading forums seem to running fine. The for sale has slowed down a little, but maybe that's because all I've been putting up there lateley is the more expensive stuff from my collection, and not a lot of people have that kind of money to spend right now. I am a patient man, and I know things will pick up again. Besides, if I never sell that Massey bowie, it really wont bother me too much. :)
