Hey folks, starting a thread to help out a buddy from another forum who is also a member here as well as other sites, who is an experienced collector but is at the point of wanting to move some of his customs and better knives via consignment.

To avoid any conflicts, don't link to sites that are not bladeforums supporters, but feel free to mention them. This will help us circumvent needing to moderate the thread.

Your experiences, positive and / or negative will be appreciated.

Serious, on point answers only, please...out of respect for the person I'm trying to assist. He has sold here in the past, and on other sites, as well as via auction, so this is limited to "consignment" only, as he is experienced with other methods.

(I've only purchased, (new and pre-owned), from purveyors...but have never consigned any of my knives, hence my asking.)

Arizona Custom Knives does consignment sales.

They take a 25% cut, and won't take anything worth less than $200. I've never used them for consignments, but I've bought from them before and it was a good experience.

I’ve sold with them, the cut is a bit steep but they’re been fantastic to work with, no problems whatsoever, assuming you’re not in a big hurry to sell. You get a pretty big audience looking at your stuff that way. Just can take a bit of patience.

No personal experience beyond buying some books, but I've read positive things about Nordic Knives.

If the custom knives are non-tactical, I find Nordic Knives to be the best, followed by Knifelegends, which deals with higher end stuff. And I trust them both completely, which I cannot say about a couple of other dealers, the names of which will go without mention................

EDIT: Just be sure to do business with a dealer whose website does not mention restocking fees AND who guarantees to take back any purchase within 48 hrs. of receipt............ Not all will..........

A. G. Russell's cuttingedge.com has always been a highly rated site and I check it out at least once a week. Not sure on the cut, but A.G. was always a strong supporter of this site and the knife industry in general. The knives move fast on that site and they do customs as well as production knives.

Here's their info page. Guess the take 25% as well. http://www.cuttingedge.com/sell

My previous post on this topic was deleted because the moderator thought it was too "meandering."

So, let me try to restate my point.

I have purchased knives and other things that were "on consignment" without any problems. Paid for the product and received it. End of story.

Buyers are really at little if any risk in buying consigned property. The "risk" in consignment sales mainly lies with the seller.

Regardless of what is being consigned, the seller bears the risk of loss due to a variety of causes which can result in NOT being paid or NOT receiving the return of the consigned property, knife or otherwise, if:

1) The dealer goes out of business and disappears in the night.

2) The dealer goes bankrupt and you have to prove that your knife does not belong to the dealer (but to you) and should NOT be "liquidated" w/the rest of the dealer's assets to pay off its/his outstanding debts.

3) The dealer is "untrustworthy" and doesn't pay the seller what he is due from the sale of the consigned property.

4) The dealer is the victim of a burglary and the consigned property is stolen.

There are all things that a consignor of any property for sale by others should be concerned with and are the reasons I have NEVER consigned anything of my own for sale.

And I will reiterate that the purpose of this thread is to identify those purveyors whom the individual would benefit from doing business with...or avoiding.

(The potential risks involved, from loss by the carrier, to the purveyor, to acts of God, while certainly important, are not going to help him whittle down from among the potential companies that may offer the service. And that is our sole aim in this discussion.)

The vendor I mentioned in my post above I can say I’ve been dealing with for about 6-7 years and have not had any negative issues. Once my payment was lost in the mail and they could not have been more agreeable at sending another check via priority overnight. Agreed it’s important to look at their reputation and lasting power, but I think many of these places have been around for ages and are not going anywhere anytime soon!

I don't know if that minimum $200 value thing is an old rule of theirs, but they have a lot of items listed for sale under $200. They sold a Kissing Crane stiletto last year for $95.

Although I haven't been in contact with them, my guess is that they don't want someone sending them just one knife worth less than $200. But I'm guessing that if someone sent them, say, 3 knives that could be sold for around $100 each, they would accept them, especially if they are in high demand. But of course people could always contact them to find out. :)

This is right, I’ve sent a few lower value along with higher value and there’s never been an issue.

Mods if this is inappropriate please delete but I will go ahead and name names, so to speak

I have bought & sold, with very positive experiences, from these vendors:

Arizona Custom Knives
Knife Purveyor
Nordic Knives
Knife Legends (higher end)

All these gentlemen & ladies attend knife shows & meetings, show respect, and have been in business for years if not decades.

Why consignment? They always take a cut. Why not list them here in the classifieds of BF? I've sold every single knife I've listed for sale here. Maybe I'm missing the reason for the consignment part.

If you don’t want the hassle of one by one negotiating and packing and sending each item I can say from experience it can be worth coughing up the percentage to just be done with it all at once. Can also work out just giving shipment costs to do a bulk shipment to consignment.

He has, as mentioned above, sold here, elsewhere, on ebay, etc. Apparently, he is interested in having someone else do the work, so he can move several pieces without all the hassle.

I've thought about it in the past, as regards the future. Tons of individual sales is not all that appealing.

Ok, the "tons of individual sales" part puts it all into perpective now.

It would depend on the type of customs they are but reddit has a sub called KnifeRaffle where higher end "pocket jewelry" type knives are raffled. You can reach out in the weekly meta thread to see if someone will escrow one for you. Not sure about the terms for those though.
