Semi-End of Customs

With the announcement yesterday I see two trends.
1) an immediate increase in value of existing customs, and
2) the beginning of a trade in invoices for outstanding orders.

This forum is a perfect vehicle for the invoice market to establish itself. Firstly, those who have knives on order and would trade their rights to purchase for cash today would post. What orders are out there? What are the order numbers? What should they sell for? What are the projected waiting times? Which knives will Ernie make first? Are invoice numbers sequential irrespective of of model, or are they model number specific?

Needless to say, the questions just keep coming. However, with the good minds that visit here, my bet is that order will prevail.

I have an order for a CQC 6 and 8. I wonder if the time frame will still be the same, or if they will be finished any sooner.

I have orders in for 2 ES-1-M's: A lefty & a righty. I'm patient & can wait it out...

Some care needs to be taken on this subject, since there is a strong element of uncertainty in it. Ernie has publicly stated on several occasions that it is his intention to produce batches of knives by model, and fill orders in that manner. As an example, he made a batch of 50 CQC6s in February, and sent them to the fifty lowest invoice numbers for orders on 6s. He recently made a batch of 5s, which will go to the forty three lowest invoice numbers of orders for 5s. Less, in both cases, however many knives he decides to hold back for shows and other personal uses. So a customer who has an invoice for a CQC7 numbered 475 may not see his knife for months after a customer with invoice for a CQC6 numbered 575 gets his knife.

Why does that matter? If we trade invoices, or sell them, you have no method of determining when you're delivery should be made. You can't turn to Ernie, as he tends to eschew questions of delivery even to the legitimate customer. And, in the unlikely event that the seller is nefarious, he could take delivery of the knife he's sold you the invoice to - Ernie's going to notify and deliver to him, not you - and plausibly deny it. How can you check? Nor can you even state with any degree of certainty that a given knife will be made. On the most conservative, magnanimous basis, the present backlog of orders is three year's solid work. What is the discounted value of that stream of production?

I prefer to continue to wait with my own order, ad infinitum, or go to the secondary market for actually made knives. That way you know who made it and what its value truly is. I do agree wholeheartedly with Jackstraw that this change immediately adds a premium to the older knives that were made in the olden days.

Jbravo,
Point taken. I am not trading my invoice because I can't wait to get my ti Commander. Furthermore, the idea of trading invoices is a shakey proposition for all the reasons that you mention. Trading knives or cash for knives is the way to go.
