This past Saturday, the Full Contact Martial Arts Association held a seminar in Frederick, MD on the topic of training for Empty Hands vs Weapons.
In spite of the threat of bad weather ... and the next day being Super Bowl Sunday, we had a good group.
The morning consisted of learning how to use footwork to control range and position, as well as to generate power. Covered were: forward & reverse triangles, side stepping, weaving, ducking, etc. Also covered were the various "weapons": punches, hacks, slaps, elbows, knees, sikaran kicks.
The afternoon consisted of pulling it all together and showing how to apply these things via drills like: stick tapping, knife tapping, knife passing, dodging drill, etc. At this time disarms were also added to the repetoire. At the very end, there was an added treat as Dave Wink decided to throw in some Penchak Silat.
Also, one of the seminar participants (who was a return participant from a previous seminar, and former Green Beret team leader), treated all of us to some examples garrote techniques using some parachute cord. He showed how to apply it against stick, knife and empty hand attacks, in a quick, efficient, and (when need be) ... lethal manner.
All in all, a very educational and fun day for EVERYONE!!! You might say I'm partial since it was my guro's seminar, and you'd probably be right ... but anyone in attendance would easily agree that (if nothing else) the garrote techniques were well worth it!
We have more seminars on tap for later this year, and I'll keep everyone updated.
Respectfully,
Dave Fulton
