OooRah!

God bless our Corps, and God bless Chesty Puller, wherever he may be: his spirit lives on.

He will, indeed. He was a Marine's Marine, as well as being the most decorated man in Marine Corps history.

I had the honor of meeting him once when I was a child. Not while I was serving, of course: he was retired by then. This must have been just after Korea, because I was only around eight years old, or so. I think my dad was a Major at the time, but he'd served with Puller back in WW 2. A man came to the house one day, and my dad called me over to introduce him. Dad said something to the effect of "Bobby, say hello to General Puller." which of course I did, followed by "can I go play now?" General Puller used to do things like that, and just drop in on people he knew. I, of course, had no idea that I was meeting a living legend. To me, he was just another of my dad's friends. Later, of course, he came to embody all that a Marine should be in my eyes, but at eight or nine years old? No.

I've met and served with some outstanding Marines in my day, but I'm still proud to say that I shook the hand of Chesty Puller.

Very impressive!

Most people know him from this quote:

"They are in front of us, behind us, and we are flanked on both sides by an enemy that outnumbers us 29:1. They can't get away from us now!"

- Lewis B. "Chesty" Puller, USMC

When the Marines were cut off behind enemy lines and the Army had written the 1st Marine Division off as being lost because they were surrounded by 22 enemy divisions. The Marines made it out inflicting the highest casualty ratio on an enemy in history and destroying 7 entire enemy divisions in the process. An enemy division is 16500+ men while a Marine division is 12500 men. "They are a damn site better than the U.S. Army, at least we know that they will be there in the morning."
- Lewis B. "Chesty" Puller

Just to clarify that was about 12,500 Marines vs about 363,000 enemy troops. they destroyed 115,500 enemy troops. Oooo Rawww

I understand Marines, and what they are, very well. I grew up in the marine Corps: it's an old family tradition going back for a long, long time. I grew up with stories like those long before I ever served, yet they still make my chest swell.

OooRah.

Happy BD USMC. Couple of my best friends are USMC. "Good night Chesty where ever you are."
