Sending folding knives into USA a no-go?

Slightly odd situation that I'm facing. Need to send a Sebenza in for refurbishing but it looks to be problematic.

Our postal service is claiming that, when shipping to the United States, on the list of prohibited items are switchblades (ok, old rule, fair enough) and folding knives. That would be all of them.

I gave them a ring and asked what's up, and get some story that the airlines who carry freight and U.S. Customs have dictated such a rule. I remain highly skeptical of this but that's what they are saying.

Opinions, experiences?

Yep, that's a possibility. If it comes to that I'll send it in two parts.

I just do not quite understand how the same airlines that carry the knives I buy from the U.S. are not able to take something back.

I think they might be working on an outdated mandate sent out by US Customs a year or two ago that tried to lump all folding knives in as Switchblades under our import law. It was not a new law, but rather an flawed and over-inclusive interpretation of the existing law.

The thing is, the president and congress struck this down by changing the law itself so that their could be NO mistake. http://www.akti.org/news/akti-us-customs

I guess your postal service didn't get the memo. Maybe you could clue them in?

Thanks for the link glistam, very useful information.

I spoke again with the postal service, they are simply saying that they get their info from the receiving country and that all folding knives are on the banned list. No specific date given, regarding this change of policy.

I think I may have to send them a few links and updates because frankly I'm not buying their claims.

no need to send it in different parcels IMO
Just dismantle it. Include all parts in the same box.
Label it as knife hardware. Or even camping tool.
In both cases you are being honest.
