Sending in a blade to reprofile?

PICS ADDED - Just to give you an idea of what I'm talking about

I have some SH-Es that have the asymmetric grind on them. Additionally, the grind is not constant, e.g. on one the asymmetric grind from choil to tip starts out at about 3mm to 7mm. The other side of the blade is a constant grind of about 2mm.

I'm not too crazy about their look as was wondering if anyone has ever sent a blade with the asymmetric edge back to Busse to have a symmetric edge put on? I know that a good deal of INFI may have to be taken off and I'd rather have the professionals do this so I don't screw it up.

I plan on calling the shop on Monday but was hoping you Hogs can provide me a quick answer over the weekend. Looking to find out how long it could take and is there a charge for this to be done? Thanks.

that implies you have more than one. Come on SNAFU share the wealth. I would love one of those, PLEASE!!

I am not sure what you mean but if you have to remove a significant amount of metal (4mm? ) it will cost quite a bit. I think I remember that turning a swedge into a sharpened edge would cost over $400 dollars. This is just from memory and this was over six months ago I think so I could be very wrong.

A much cheaper option would be to invest in an edge pro with a few spare extra coarse stones. I have reprofiled a few blades (sometimes having to remove over one mm of steel from behind the edge!) and the EP does a great job. It is pretty quick (relatively), very consistent and can be done at home for far less than what I remember the shop would charge. This is not to bash the shop, but with mil. orders and civilian orders alike, time consuming work is probably costly. Considering you have more than one SHe's, the edge pro may be a cheaper option.

I cleaned up the edge on my HOG FSH and brought it down to 21 degrees in less than half an hour. Turning an asym. edge into a sym. edge should not take that long, as the coarse stones really remove metal. The marker trick really helps to make sure you are getting the edge and not the flats. If you are careful, the blades finish will not be marred.

Peter, $400......

I will definitely look into the Edge Pro. I know this has been discussed before, but which model would you recommend? The Apex or the Pro? I believe the main difference is the base and that the pro can sharpen scissors. Help! With that much money I could get a HH or the sharpener and another knife.

Peter, I think you are mistaken.

Turning a swedge into an edge is one thing, simply resharpening or reprofileng an existant edge is something else again.

Call the shop to be sure, but I would think the return shipping would be all of the charge. $9.95 in the USA?

Peter / Rob, thanks. I'm definitely calling this week. The main issues is the one SH-E that I mentioned above, the edge really looks strange to me and not like any other asymmetric grind I've seen before. Maybe it was one of those late night jobs that Garth worked on.... :D

Maybe Jerry might even bless my post.

been there done that.....

BTW....
Hey, guys....
Depending on cost, you could always contact other makers.
Locals in your area shouldn't charge too much for that type of work.

I did to, I actually cracked up and realized that it was a loaded question on this forum.

Pics added, either way I plan on beating all three since they are not in MINT condition and potentially making one Satin. Suggestions? Leave alone or reprofile?

Get some good waterstones and see just how sharp you can get them.

I HATED the asm edge!!!!!

Not till it was gone did I realize just how useful it was for the field.

Convex on one side, flat on the other. You would HAVE to have something to sharpen one side or the other. Flat rock but no strop? You're covered. No rock, but a strop of sorts? Covered.

YMMV
