Sending knives back for repair...

I've never sent a knife back to Buck for repair. I have two (110's) to send back...

Knife #1 just needs to be tightened up, the blade is loose and wiggles when folded, and has a slight wiggle when unfolded. Also needs sharpening.

Knife #2 has a broken tip, and a cracked scale. Has a slight wiggle to the blade when folded, yet is solid in the open position.

Both knives are 4 dot 110FG's that I use as EDC's. When I send them to Buck for repair, will they send me some kind of estimate for the repairs? I am not the original owner, I bought them both off e-Bay. Also, I've heard that they sometimes, on bad cases, will just send you back a new knife rather than fix your old one. I'd really rather have my old ones than a new one. Thats why I bid for them on e-Bay in the first place. :D

Thanks for any info you may pass along!

Hi Juggler2...

I have not sent anything in yet. Got a Alpha Folder and a older 110FG that I've been meaning to send in. But my road to hell is pretty well travelled.

Anyway, when I do it, I am going to contact Joe Houser (Buck Employee of The Months) in advance by email. If I were you I would do the same. He may see this thread and reply, but, if he doesn't I am pretty certain you will get an e-mail response.

Tip: I have read here is to address your package to "BKI" as opposed to "Buck Knives" in order to keep our esteemed postal employees free of temptation
.

Be very specific in a note as to what you want done, and whether or not the knife has special meaning.

If it doesn't, you could get a new one in its place.

Like Goose said...don't put knife in the addressing.

Use BK Inc.

The broken tip 4 dot will most likely get a blade change. And if it has broken scales, they would most likely just send a new replacement. So think about sending it in if it has special meaning.
I doubt they still have 4 dot blades laying around.

And,,,if these are going to be collectables,,,why bother even sending them? Just curious..... Lots of different thoughts on this...

There have been some instances of old frames coming back with new blades that didn't fit properly because of differences in old and new.

tough decisions.....have fun...

Yes, what they said. :)
The only other bit of advice I would add is to make sure you send them in a box. You would be surprised at how many empty envelopes we get here with a hole worn through and nothing but a note describing there now lost keepsake knife. Most envelopes can't survive the long trip through the postal machine, especially with a heavy knife.
Hope this helps.

Joe,
I wonder if a sticky here might be in order. I know there is a "how to" somewhere else here in BF, but it is obviously not readily visiable.

and congrats on the sale of the #1v1

Buck returned my 110 to me in a box marked BKI, took me a minute (I'm slow) to realize it meant Buck Knives Inc. Probably good advice from Goose to send to Buck under BKI as well.

I will share an "almost" nightmare story that happened last month.

Ordered three heavy "knife tools" from another group and they were wrapped in cardboard around the heavy part, with that loose type packing paper around the rest, and then stuffed in a too large box.

Picked the box up at the post office and it had holes all in it, with one end open where the tape split. Holes were from the ends moving around inside and gouging out a hole.

Fortunately all three tools were still in it. I took them out via the open end without any extra effort or forceing open any other part of the box.

So,,,,they were not securely wrapped in bubble wrap type wrapping, and the box was not sufficently filled with materials to prevent them from moving around in the box. And the flap edges only had one tape strip on each end.

Needless to say, I sent off a couple of emails with no response.

Always use a box, securely wrap/roll the knife in insulated packing material and make extra sure it will not shift around in the box.

I could have been out $600 bucks worth of items. I guess I am still a little ticked at that bunch.

No,,,wasn't Buck. Have never gotten anything from Buck that wasn't securely packaged. Have never gotten anything from the other one that I felt WAS securly packaged. Talking about factory direct now...not aftermarket.

Thanks everybody! I'll send Joe an e-mail before do anything. And I'll take the tip Goose passed along about addressing it "BKI". And definatly I'll use a box.

Again, thanks for the responses/info! :)

Good Luck with sending in your Buck, Juggler.
I hope all goes well with it.

I have a UPS horror story...

I ordered a NOS surplus M-16 barrel two years back...Place in California...It came UPS...nicely wrapped & taped box; all kinds of packing; and a nice neat 1" hole in one end...and no barrel... :(

If you'd ever seen the machines that USPS/UPS/FedEx all use to sort & route packages...or the cargo handlers at any airport...you wouldn't be much surprised...

I phoned UPS and asked about any metal tubes being found at the facilities along the way...no dice...it was only $56 but a NOS barrel for that $ is hard to find...The company did refund my money...

I just know some UPS driver has that barrel stuck under his truck seat... :grumpy: It looks better than a pipe... :)
